SC Flightmodel Discussion

Early days yet. I backed both and thing both will be great. Sure ED is the game after my heart but I think this looks gorgeous and with a bit of tweaking...............

No point gloating at this point however, alpha is alpha, otherwise you could argue it would ha e been fair to judge elite multiplayer on alpha 2.0

Well, I'm an American and I've heard of it. :D

I will completely agree that the unveiling of the dog fight module went poorly. Poor planning, poor presentation. Why no backup server when the first one went down? Etc. Without sitting down at a computer and playing it, though, I'm not about to cast judgement on their flight model. It looks fine to me, but we'll see.

seeing how clunky the flight on SC is compared to a video of ED shows that SC is taking the Arcade route. don't get me wrong SC looks very pretty and so it should with $40 million behind it. but after playing ED Alpha and watching SC they are clearly two very different flight models and SC I think needs to improve big time.

its looking like a thing that's a thing.

backed this also but the feeling is that its got a ways to go alright. won't draw any comparisons to ED. the planet looks nice :)

agreed early days. and SC does indeed look gorgeous but that jarring control of the ship may as well be a video of someone playing Galaxy on Fire HD.

The thing that troubles me with the flight model is that it appears the ships have no inertia whatsoever. They are way too twitchy for the mass they are supposed to have, even if they had extremely powerful trust.

Also, I suspect that the yaw model they use (I know it is controversial) will lead directly to space turrets in practice.

$40 million you say?, omfg what is wrong with Merica ..

Then again Facebonker overhypes themselves somewhere in $20 billions.

That mean ED worth more than $80 billions!.

Must admit, while the planet, asteroids and stuff look very pretty, the lasers, combat bits look very arcady to me, which at first retro glance it was soothing, but I don't think that's what they were going for.

Negativity aside, I'm sure it will be worthwhile playing SC. I intend to give it a go if I can afford it.

obviously you haven't seen the picture of me in the last news letter.

I have, a gun would be overkill ;)

I didn't back SC, not because I had any particular beef with it (I loved Freelancer and Wing Commander) but because I only have x number of hours of my life I can spend lost in computer games.

It's aesthetic is very different to ED and I'd not want to make an assumption on the finished product from a single sample.

Wait and see I guess.

It is a shame that while ED is well known in Europe and UK, it doesn't appear to impinge on the US gamer consciousness as much.

I have to agree that SC has very strong arcade flavor - which may be, or may be not Chris intention, but it's clearly not for me and I really like ED style so much better.

Overall I see DFM coming out as good sign - I am very tired of hearing comparisions built on promises. Now games in their development can be compared more objectively.

God that would be a disaster! I bought that ages ago in some vague hope it would be a good indie space shooter, and it was so dissapointing.

Exactly my thoughts. I am really disappointed to see that the clunky flight model hasn't changed from the sneak peak in December, as well as the arcade-like "feel" to the whole thing. I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't look right. It looks like flying around in spectator mode.

Also, the "LOOK IM GOING BACKWARDZ!!!" statement made me facepalm. After having experienced the flight model in ED, I have absolutely no doubt that SC's "newtonian" mode will only lead to jousting - of which ED is a great proof of concept that having to manually counter thrust eliminates that behavior almost entirely.

I suppose I'll have to reserve judgement until I actually play it. I can't wait to try it out, but I'm keeping my expectations really low.

While SC's head movement is broken and way too much, the flight model isn't anymore arcade than ED's and if the mass is mostly at the center of the ship and they tweaked the thruster placement a little it would kinda make sense.

In fact it's ED that is the most arcade one with that optimum corner spacespeed mechanic (I know it's for gameplay reasons) and the way too slow attitude rates.

Being able to turret in space is more realistic, so before you call something arcade, please think first.

Er, whats with all the screaming?

Did they have topless girls dancing around or something. :)

It doesnt look like it has much weight, sort of like a fps but with a cockpit background instead of a gun.

Nice graphics. Looks like an early version of the game, shame it crashed on their live show. E.D seems to have an edge here with Frontier haveing come longer in development and testing. :) We are getting two awesome space sims. Thats all I can say.
