Scale of the Galaxy

Ehat is the point of a home base vs no home base?

Purely your chosen play style.

If you set up shop in a particular system, you can work with or against any of the local factions, affecting the background simulation.

Or you can be a space gypsy, and go wherever your fancy or missions take you.

Entirely up to you. This is what I like the most, as you can, as the ads say, play your own way.

Ehat is the point of a home base vs no home base?

There are a few things which can come from having a home base

1 - Having all your ships together
2 - Having a bit of an anchor (it's a big galaxy)
3 - Being friendly or focusing on a faction and helping it to grow (especially if it's your own faction)

Number three is especially pleasant if you do have your own faction in game. Being able to perform missions / bounty hunt for your faction, increase their influence and then spread them out to another system, and then do that again etc. etc. Admittedly this can get you a few systems and so you have lots of "home bases" but still there's something special about your real HQ and where things started etc.
