Scanner: Logarithmic or Linear - what's the difference?

So, my question: I can switch between linear and logarithmic scaling for the scanner in the control panel.

But it doesn't make any noticeable difference. Check out these images:

linear:

See the difference?

Well, I can't. So what's the difference? Should I open a ticket?

math 101:

example of logarithmic function:

example of linear function:

only works in regular space, SC seems to be a kind of logarithmic

The setting doesn't make much of a difference. The scanner is almost useless no matter what settings you use :)

The main problem is that the default scaling in normal space caps out at 500m, and resets every time you enter normal space. For those who don't know, this is possible to change in the controls, however it's a bit of a chore to do it every time.

This doesn't effect super cruise as they're always using a custom scaling to make it useful. This is for normal space only.

From private beta to now, I've never found the linear option to make a difference - does it actually do anything? I would much prefer the scanner to be linear when in normal flight.

Linear mode in normal space is definitely broken. If you fly past a stationary object it moves in a circular pattern around you (on the scanner) as you pass it implying that the distance on the scanner is still a logarithmic function of actual distance. High time this was fixed TBH.

I agree. I ticketed it months ago but think the ticket was closed.

Ok, thank you!

So, why not lock it out in supercruise? I find this a bit confusing. Or change the functionality of the switch in Supercruise and make it switch from player-centered to target-centered.

If targets are celestial bodies you could add the orbital lines here instead of on the main display. This would make them much better recognizable, unclutter the main view and provide a very immersive overview on the system or the surroundings of each body.

It shouldn't be too difficult. If a smartphone today can calculate relative positions a ship computer from the future certainly should, too.

The I suspect the reason why it was added hasn't been fully defined - or there is a feature that uses it that is missing?

Because other than that, and with it not working in SC, it seems like a rather pointless addition.

Edit: Although I do appreciate it can be bound to an axis now, although I would maybe expect that in increasing/decreasing the range it might dynamically change it's energy use (i.e. shorter range = less % energy used) but this doesn't seem to be the case?

And the linear setting isn't working at all. Not in SC, not in 'normal space'.
One would expect the scanner to work like in Oolite when the linear setting is enabled, meaning original ELITE scanner with zoom function.

Sorry to bring this back up but I've tested this in Supercruise and it does change. Is it a case of another thing you've not been told?

Sadly where I'm filming this is in the void and I wasn't coming back just to get ships in here but as you can see the player ship icon does scale and the planets move, the same does happen for NPC and PC ships also in supercruise (either they come closer or go to the edge). There does seem to be a max distance at which things don't change - but your statement of "it doesn't effect super cruise" is wrong.
