Scooping ore painfully hard/RESOURCES UNALLOCATED

I have the ore in sight, with cargo scoop activated, and its lined up perfect in the alignment interface--i move forward at 1km and keep it centered, then all i hear is it clunk off my ship and wobble off into space. This is a fricking space game, do we really need to manually scoop ore? A damn fishing net would work better than this system. Im even fine with how bad it sucks, IF I COULD JUST SCOOP THE ORE.

also how do i turn off the RESOURCES UNALLOCATED message after i do get one piece of ore, so that i can actually see the interface to try and scoop again? do i really need to go in and process one piece of ore before i can scoop another?

That's because you have to go to your cargo tab and refine the ore you just scooped. I'd advise going to youtube and reviewing something before engaging in that activity...would prevent a lot of stress.
And it reqiures a refinery to be able to process the ore.

Unlike games where the entire process is animated, mining in Elite actually carries some skill with it. You'll eventually become really efficient with scooping ore and it'll be easy but there is an initial learning curve.

Also, the resources unallocated message is there to help you. You need to refine the ore in your cargo hold before you can scoop more.

Aim at the top of the object in the cargo scanner window. This will stop it hitting you and also prevent you from destroying/hitting the object if you come in too fast.
I've seen some people say one of the ships has a bad cargo scoop placement. I think it was the hauler or adder? not sure.
The trick to mining is to find the slowest moving spot on the asteroid and shoot it until all the fragments have come out. This creates an easy to scoop arc of fragments that you can quickly go forward and back picking them up.
Make sure you use a 4 bin refinery to cut down on allocating resources.

If you've got it lined up in the 'alignment interface', and there's no red 'Resource Unallocated' in that interface, there can only be on thing that's happening if you say they're clunking against your ship and wobbling off - you're going too fast. The interface will sound an alert, and will turn red around the edges if you're going too fast. You want blue edges and that easy sonar ping sound.

I have tried to get into mining, I really have. Visited countless major reserves in metallic rich clusters and rings, no pristine yet, but it's just tedious. Especially the going round to collect the ore and then starting again. If I found a gold mine then it would like be worth it but for mainly minerals when I could earn seriously more by either bounty hunting or rates trading (or just trading) it's not something I'll pursue further. Then again it was the same story in the original elite.

I had a similar experience when I (finally) decided to try mining. I hadn't seen or read any instructions about it, just went ahead and slowly figured out what needs to be done to finally have one ton of something in the cargo hold. I just couldn't believe how slow and tedious it was. I had little problem with scooping, but still, sheesh! I'll much rather e.g. trade rare commodities (even though they are now so nerfed with the limited supply), and enjoy exploration during the long(ish) trips.
At the least there should be an option to have the scooped chunk automatically refined if there are empty bins available in the refinery!

Well that's the point when you say if you found gold it would be worth it. You can't expect to make a fortune out of the cheap stuff. The whole point of mining is to strike it rich!

i have everthing lined up, and i am literally only going 1 (km?) as slow as you can possibly go. I am using an Adder, so i think the scoop placement has to be part of the issue.

Also, i have watched many videos, and understand how its supposed to work. No reason to be a__holes about it. It just would make more sense to allow you to scoop more than 1 piece at a time and then process it.

- asteroids have "sweet spots" that generate the best average yield (effect most pronounced in Pristine fields) - if found at high yield (upto 75%), keep mining around there to get the maximum out of it

I just tested this on five rocks. It didn't matter where or how I hit the asteroids, roughly the same yield was produced.

Is there a video out there of this being done?
