Screenshot File Format

I just raised a problem on issue tracker. For the sake of clarity I wanted to include a couple of screenshots.

Alt/Alt-F10 saves a screenshot in .bmp format, but the issue tracker requires .jpg/.png

I mean, really?!

The screenshot tool is not primarily meant for use with the issue tracker. bmp is mostly used with Windows, where jpg and png are internet standards used in web browsers.

You can easily switch formats using free programs such as MS Paint. And many of the free third party tools people use with ED will also convert screenshots to web formats.

Main reason the using .bmp is annoying is because uncompressed bitmaps are two or three times the size of common lossless formats (e.g. PNG), but I can see how it would be frustrating for a less technically adept user to try to file a bug report and have it ask for formats the game doesn't natively produce.

Personally, I think the screenshot functionality should default to creating both PNGs and much smaller JPEGs. The issue tracker should also be fully integrated into the game itself.

Hi :)

I agree.
I use the screenshot quite a lot as I use it to quickly record the systems I've (1st) discovered, if that system has any interesting (to me) features. I used to manually record the systems designated names and features down on paper, but this obviously is a time consuming process, so now I just take a screenshot and then afterwards copy that screenshot into various folders which are named according to what that system contains. For example, if the system contains any ELW's it will go into a folder named ELW's, or if on the other hand it contains for instance Water giants then it will be copied to another folder titled water giants etc. etc.

I convert all these screenshots to jpeg's when transferring them to the relevant folders (to cut down on HD space) using MS paint so it's still time consuming, if the screenshot defaulted to jpeg's then obviously I would't need to do that in the first instance.
The whole process takes up HD space for sure, but I find this method a good way of recording my discovered systems, and also if I want to refer back to them for any reason in the future. I can also edit them using MS paint to add text to the pictures, for example if I want to point out good mining spots or other individually interesting data in those systems.
I suppose it's probably not the best way to record data of this type, but I find a pictorial plus text format easier to browse through (and understand) than just a text type format.

Jack :)

As a stopgap measure: EDDiscovery at least (there may be others) can do this automagically for you - monitor the screenshot folder, convert to jpg, rename (IIRC) and store in a location of your choice.
