screenshots

Greetings,
I've got a question concerning the game native screenshots, why the hell are you using BMP file type?
Why the hell is each capture 100Mb each? and why the freaking hell don't you accept on this forum you own files??

YES ! this file is obviously too big ! I didn't even notice the file size before I tried to send here !
I mean i got 31 captures for 1310Mb !!
even the "small" size are 5 to 10Mb each

Conclusion, please update your screen capture file type, even windows XP used jpg & png natively...

Even in no-loss conversion you get 1/10 ratio !

BMP is a lossless but uncompressed format
if you store each pixel on a 1/1 ratio, obviously it's lossless ...

but you don't get the point that the issue here is that it's filling up more space that it needs.
PNG is lossless and compressed and public (non-patented)
BMP is lossless and uncompressed and owned by Microsoft

Ask artists why they prefer bmp over png

Btw bmp is free to use and works in a lot of OS's
yep, you're right on this, patent is free of use, and due to its old age it's fine to use it anywhere since the 90ies, and PNG same thing since 2000 I'd say :)
and it's not an artist choice for format, only devs did that choice

Just guesing here:

Perhaps the compression makes editing in PNG take (much) longer and is more heavy on the machine? Albeit disk space

Only 100Mb?

Mine are 388Mb, but then when I got a 4k monitor I did drop the hi-res screen capture from 6x back down to 4x, because 874Mb was a bit much even for me 😋

But in all seriousness. Just so you're aware the size limit for attaching files to the forum is 1Mb. Converting to jpeg, uploading to imgur and linking here is the best bet.

Irfran is a great free piece of software that can batch convert files for you. Also I use EDDiscovery for recording my journeys, that has a feature where it will automatically convert screenshots when you take them. You can choose whether to keep or delete the original and you can choose your output file type to.

You're right & wrong at the same time, depending on the environnement :
using SSD & Proc : proc time with quick writing
using HDD & Proc : proc time with longer writing

PNG does take more calculation, as any compression work does, but for the many that does use HDD, this writing time does take more time than the calculation time due to the huge size.
I did the test here, comparing the convert + move time ton anther drive and the move as it is. and the result is nearly the same with a little quicker for the PNG but I've transferred to a 5200rmp.

This is REALLY too much ...

EDDiscovery ? never heard of this, I'll have a look on this one then !
I'm using XnView, for all picture & photo management (conversion included), I was using Irfran on Win 98 though xD

My screenshot folder is only 114Gb :) But then I've been playing since Beta and love taking screenshots.

EDDiscovery is the only 3rd party tool I use, I've been using it since launch too. It's nice as it has a lot of options, and the ability to add notes to things, so I use it as my journal basically. There's a thread about it on the forums.

you could also try using winkey+print screen, this a windows 10 feature that works in most games and within windows, itll create a PNG in pictures\screenshots which is half(ish) the size of BMP

not even sure ALT+F10 even works (my odyssey screen appears to be capturing but just flickers like nuts and does nothing) that gives a higher res capture which can only be bigger than F10...

windows 10 ... nah I prefer stable version for now :)

it does work, it flickers as in fact its making multiple captures of the size of your actual screen and then group them all together. this is how i get 100Mb file in 7680x4320 px
well this is how I understand it

if your using steam you could also use F12 (default can be changed in steam) which also iirc creates a PNG...

if you dont use steam then iirc you should be able to get a steam key from the Fdev store if you purchased via Frontier, or just add ED as a non steam game

Hi-res screen captures take a screenshot that is 4 times your display resolution. You can edit it in the settings file and up the res to 8 times, if you go any higher it's breaks :)

If you are pressing Alt+F10 and no screenshot is appearing in the folder, then that might be an issue with your antivirus blocking the Odyssey exe from saving screenshots. I was having the issue https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/cannot-take-screenshots-in-odyssey.575633/

Elite still takes the highest quality screenshots of any game I've played. Even if you take the screenshots and then convert them, they will still be better quality than Steam screenshots.

Unfortunaly, I use EDHM and it's conflicting with any overlay. I was using steam before though ...

Nice, could you please share the specific setting I need to alter?

Sure. Navigate to the Graphics folder which is C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics

In there is a file called Settings.xml. In that file find and change <HighResScreenCapScale>4</HighResScreenCapScale> Like I said I wouldn't go above 8 though.

As an aside I have made a shortcut to the Options folder and put it in a more accessible place, because Bindings, Graphics and Audio are in there.
