Second account: backups, parallel use, Steam ???

Hi all,

probably the false subforum, but I've not found any better suited .... I've an Idea to start completely new, with a sidey and then play only in open. Just to get even more reality feeling and to try out some ships, I've not used in my career and found only now during theorycrafting ...

As I know myself though, after some time I'll miss my perfectly built Explorer-Annie, the Python, which has earned lots of credits and progress - all that sentimental story... So the question is: how can I get the second/new account without deleting the now existing one, and switch between the both as soon as I want it. My actual (incomplete) idea is:
  1. Create a second user account in windows.
  2. Start there Elite launcher and create there a new account. Or create it on Frontier homepage/store somewhere...Lots of doubts already here.
  3. Switch between windows user accounts to play with the old or the new account.
Do I need then to buy a second license of Elite? How do I organize this? Do I need even a second Steam account? Can I have two Steam accounts, which refer to the same credit card in order to pay for paints or similar toys?

Lot's of questions and too lazy to google all this :) I hope someone can share his own steps/solutions for the whole stuff.

Thanks a lot in advance!

OK, patience and me are just two different things :) have digged through google and found following possibilities:
  1. First of all, as expected for a second account on a PC I need to buy a second license.
  2. For the second license I've to create a second frontier store account - also not a thing.
  3. To use the new account, I have to logout my old account in the launcher and login the new one, maybe with some additional code from a verification mail, may be not.
  4. Alternatively I can install the second bought copy of the game into a different directory as the first one or copypaste the launcher exe, rename it and keep both accounts saved in those different launchers.
  5. Last alternative is to use two Steam accounts.
If I look on this answer from Frontier Support (CMDR Sputnik) on Reddit, it seems that I'll have to use the last variant:
Hey CMDR,

Sorry for the long wait! - We work with a que based system and aim to get back to players within a 24 hour period.

As mentioned in our response to you, it is only possible for one Frontier account to be linked to one Steam account at a time, as having multiple accounts linked could cause issues.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to access both of your PC accounts using the same Steam client, which is why it is necessary to alternate between Steam accounts.

I bought originally on steam, and my second account on frontiers site.

I use the single install of ED and login and out using the game launcher to each account.

And I play on two computers, second one while I work away from home.

Yeah, just buy a new license directly from Frontier.
The license is linked to an e-mail adress. One account, one mail adress.
In the launcher there is a 'log of' option.
Just log of one account, enter the email of the other one, the password, and the verification key (only first time) and you're done.
Fun fact: The launcher remembers the last logged in account (if you don't log of). But if you start it from the ed folder or from steam makes a difference. You can remember different accounts there, so you don't have to logoff/logon all the time.
Alternativly make a copy of you installation, but that takes 40GB or something like that, and you have to keep all copies updated.

All you need to do is make a copy of EDLaunch.exe - rename it - run it, logging in with new account - verification code - play game. Now in future no need to log out in a launcher and so no need to enter info and verification - just run the launcher for the account you want to play.

(Except of course for Steam versions bought after 25 April this year which now need to be launched from Steam.)

I've now made a fully independent installation in a separate directory - works perfectly.

You don’t need to, just ctrl c ctrl v the launcher executable and run one for each. I run 3 accounts that way. Control bindings and preferences are shared but it’s happy to keep track of multiple accounts otherwise.

Yes it’s also been impossible for recently purchased keys because apparently frontier are helping people. Go to a key site or directly from frontier to be able to do it.
