Secondary Controler Options

So a friend of mine gifted me a Thrustmaster Warthog Flight stick to replace my old junky one. No real issues with it, but because of the type of flight stick it is, it doesn't have rudder or throttle functions. I don't have room(or need) for pedals so was thinking of getting a secondary controller to manage the vertical, side, and yaw thrusters as well as the throttle. What I haven't decided on is do I want another joystick with a little throttle on it or do I want a throttle with a little joystick on it.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster...refix=thrustmaster+air,electronics,135&sr=1-2

Any advice would be appreciated.

I use a CHPro Throttle (it has a lovely mini-stick I use for lateral and vertical thrusters).

I also use a CHPro Fighterstick - again no twist - so I use pinky as a press-to-hold Yaw-to-Roll (and stepped yaw left and right on the thumb mitre HAT).

I use an X52 Pro and although it does have twist, it also has a great (but digital) stick on the throttle for lateral and vertical thrusters. I couldn't land without that, and its great in combat for pushing you off the line of incoming fire while being able to keep your nose on target, or being able to either tighten turns or accelerate during them.
For me that feels indispensable, but since I have twist I'm not sure how much I would miss yaw in comparison....

OP, thank you for this thread.

I use an old(er) Logitech Extreme 3D PRO which fits my needs as near as I can tell. With this stick, as many of you will know, I can control pitch, roll and yaw (via twist) and I find this setup extremely useful for the way I generally fly, and especially in ship based combat.

I only use the tiny little throttle on the rear of the stick during in ship combat, otherwise I use the keyboard for throttle and side thrusters in supercruise and non combat flight, as appropriate.

In the SRV I have the stick axes mapped to pitch = throttle and yaw (twist) = steering. While It did take a few minutes to get used to this setup, once I found it by trial and error using different binds, I find that it also works very well for me.

But I have been wondering lately if I'm not missing out on game enhancing control options by not having an actual throttle controller with extra buttons and, now thanks to this thread, a little stick on it as well.

Desk space within my "cockpit" is at a premium and having the stick where it is comfortable to use in my right hand, keyboard to the left of it and mouse to the right of it, any separate throttle control would be far to the left in my setup. By far left, I mean the keyboard is already off center of my body enough that typing with any real accuracy is difficult at best and any throttle control would be left of that unless I can forgo the keyboard altogether, which I'm sure would be a rather large adjustment for me personally, but willing to try.

So, as the OP is asking about which throttle to buy, I want to know if having one in the first place is game changingly useful or if it would be a "little used" luxury which I can, most likely, live without?

OP: depends. I use both.

Ok, a little less cryptic: I'm using a dual twist stick setup. ED offers 6 dof, so you'll need six axes of you want to use the full flight model. On the other end of the spectrum, you can also play ED with a gamepad - effectively 2 axes and a discrete throttle.

In my case, I use the full 6 dof usually only for manual landing/takeoff and combat. In SC, it's the right stick only for the three rotations, and incremental throttle on that stick's thumbwheel.

Yes - having a throttle is game-changing. Certainly not "little used" or a luxury in my opinion. Once you fly with one you will never want to be without again.

BTW - having the throttle and stick either side of the keyboard is very comfortable.

I would recommend you check out the VKB NXT joystick. It's got both the stick and a throttle lever. Plus, if you get the premium version, you get a second analog stick.
