I struggled a lot with SC in the beginning because I thought the tutorial (and tutorial video) were unnecessary and went back with the tail between my legs because I was having more or less your problems. After the video and tutorial it started making sense, I now anticipate SC trips, I spend the last 2 minutes adjusting speed and correcting route, spiralling around the destination if I want to slow down at the last minute but not overshoot, etc
