I thought that our 200 cubic LY of space only had 5 systems - therefore there should be another 399,999,999,995 left to explore?

I think he was comparing to games where theres maybe 200 star systems (like star citizen?

Oops - sorry....
If you need to ask that question, you probably lack experience or the game is not for you. I have spent my youth with this kind of games and later they died out (why ?) and I am missing them so much. I think you should give it a try, there are no scripted sequences, no real story written by artists, but you can really feel free and entertained and sometimes also like you have really achieved something.
First you have to ask yourself what sort of game do you want to play. No matter how good a game is, if you don't like that sort of game it is unlikely to change your mind (though not impossible).
Check the history - Elite was the first EVER 3 dimensional game and the first EVER sandbox game.

Frontier (Elite II) and Frontier First Encounters were the successors to this.
If you have played any of these then you should know what the game is about.
For a snaphost of the game, just look at the Youtube videos posted by the players.
Remember, unlike many development teams, we the alpha/beta backers are NOT under any form of non-disclosure agreement.
To me, this is some of the best advertising for the game.
Also look at the published development diaries which show the way the game is progressing and the idea the developers have.
I also agree with a comment above saying that if you are unsure, wait until the release. Just because you might enjoy the final game doesn't mean you would be so enthusiastic about the development process. At the moment we are testing NOT playing (but having a lot of fun doing it).
I also agree with the comment that the buggy "mess" we currently have is much better than some fully published AAA titles.
Why should you believe in the game - well that is all down to passion.
This game is not being produced at the behest of a number crunching software factory, it is being created by someone because they want to play it.
Similarly it is not only being tested by employees of the company, it is being tested by people with so much passion to see it created they are willing to PAY silly money for the privilege.
If those facts are not enough to encourage you into the game, then wait for the release and read the reviews of the final product.

When I go into a store I don't ask other customers to sell me a product either.
You must like space sims I gather, or why would you be here?
So you can read the newsletters and watch the vids to inform yourself.
And then make up your own mind.
This game will sell itself to those who like space sims.
If you are a space sim fan and ignore this game then you are not a space sim fan.

First of all I would like to thank all that posted something informative specially the first guy(will check all links out when I have time, yes each and every one)
To the guys complaining about me asking some simple questions without knowing my intentions or knowledge of the game, I can only shake my head and feel sorry for them.
Now to someone who said it would be good to know what I am looking for, well that is it I love open world games and space games in general and wanted some unfiltered thoughts of what others where thinking, "Understanding is one way to enlightenment". I am also a Star Citizen backer and enthusiast something I have understood is not popular around hear but I will leave it at that because I am not hear to talk about that game.
Now I do look on Elite videos all the time to gain more knowledge and I occasionally look up some info. Some of the things people claim about games are sometimes not true and just hearsay and I see allot of these comments on you tube where people are just talking ****t over witch space game is best with no facts to prove it(hence the requests for factual links) this extends to all games not just the space games of now.

There are a lot of Star Citizen backers here, including David Braben himself, unfortunately there is a tiny percentage who troll on either side and others voicing opinions without actually knowing anything, which isn't that out of the ordinary
.Elite won't be open world I am afraid, it will be open galaxy! Basically you will start with a basic Sidewinder and 100 credits somewhere within the 100,000 colonised star systems (the whole Milky Way is modelled accurately) (I don't know if you'll get to choose which factions space to start in), from there you'll be free to choose your destiny, either through trade, missions, mining, bounty hunting, piracy, and probably more things which you can do in combination. Imagine finding a nice trade route, and while at it you notice someone asking for a package delivered to the same star system. So, you will take your trade items as well as the package, and there might be a sub-mission involving another ship trying to intercept that package.
That's a basic outline, there is still a lot we don't yet know.
