General / Off-Topic "Sense of entitlement" - when did it become a dirty thing?

Here's a thought and a challenge, if you personally think that people who've never been football managers for example should keep thier collective mouths shut about football - maybe the next time there's a major game going on - you should go to a local sports pub and tell all the fans of both teams that they are special snowflakes who have no rights to complain about the state of the game, because they've never been footballers.

No, what I am saying is that hanging around a clubhouse and slagging off the team for years without going to the matches is strange. People are likely to suggest you find a club you do like, and actually support them in the matches. Because that is kinda what it is all about. Also, football fans generally dont expect anyone to do anything with their opinion, I know I dont expect management to do anything with my eloquently voiced suggestions during the match for starters. So sure, you can talk about whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. I am just pointing out to you that to the average person it would be considered rather odd to hang around a forum for a game you have never played for half a decade or so, or even once since launch. You can do so, but if you want to know why people find it odd, this is why.

And if that 'makes it personal'...

He played a few hours during alpha then asked for a refund. Never played since beta, but has been hanging around the forums for half a decade complaining. This entire topic is about him not understanding why others call him weird. Its a stalemate: he will never understand, and noone will ever consider him normal.

Tell ye what, I know I have my failings but that...thats just...nah Im lost fer words fer once. Thats just wrong on all sorts of levels...even slightly mad eccentrics like me wouldnt do that let alone normal people ^

It's a real problem that we let people get away with bending language to fit their personal little agendas.

"Discrimination" is not bad, but very important. "Entitlement" is "having a title" to something in a specific sense. "Crypto" is shorthand for an important field of mathematics, not dumb idiots wasting resources on a criminal payment system. "Immersion" means, among other things, putting something in some kind of medium. A "white knight" is something very different from a "bigot".

On the upside, you can get people into a white-hot rage just by making correct use of language :D

Cant place restrictions on language because nobody owns language...its only called the english language because thats where it originated, but the english have no rights over ownership. And even if they did, most of us would just ignore them anyway and continue on regardless.

Judging someone on how they communicate is just snobbery tbh...its focusing on the communication itself not the content of what is being said which inevitably causes issues and sometimes offence. The best english teacher in the world might never make a grammatical error, but wont ever understand sarcasm because they take the language far too seriously and literally.

Basically it means that perfect grammar doesnt make ye good at communication...just means ye have good grammar skills, nothing else. Yer ability to communicate however is now partially obscured by yer own sense of self importance...like intellectual superiority complex...or arrogance to give it a more simplified term. Take from that what ye will because thats how I think of those who try and use intellectulaism against me to prove a point...I think its literally the very definition of pathetic.

Politics wise, its true Im not an educated man, at least not in the sense most consider a formal education anyway but however...not all politicians wear a shirt and tie or get media interviews that go out on the evening news. Some work behind the scenes making others look good because on their own, they cant effectively communicate with people because they view anyone not on the same intellectual level as somehow inferior...when actually its the other way around. If they were so great at communicating then why exactly do they use people like me to do the talking for them?

The mind boggles...

When did the very real and human expectation to have delivered what's expected become a bad thing and the phrase "sense of entitlement" become a phrase synomymous with "asking or expecting for something you are neither justly due or deserving, EVEN IF YOU PAID FOR IT".

For all your pontificating about the English language, you don't seem to understand its usage very well. You see, there is this thing called 'context'. This is where the meaning of a word or phrase can change depending on how, when and/or where it's used. In this example, the context seems to make it clear that the person concerned was using the phrase 'sense of entitlement' to refer to what they regarded as an unjustified and possibly unjustifiable expectation by some that simply expressing that something should happen is enough to cause others to spend time, effort and/or money to make this come about immediately. Having an expectation to have delivered what's expected is quite reasonable - provided, of course what you expect is actually based on something concrete. For example, if FDev had launched Elite Dangerous as a side-scrolling 2D arcade shooter, then a lot of people would be justifiably angry, as that would be FDev delivering something that was completely different than what they had been saying they were making. In contrast, if, for example, someone gets angry because Elite Dangerous was launched without atmospheric landings and tries to insist that FDev MUST add this to the game IMMEDIATELY, if you take into account that David Braben and FDev have always been very clear that atmospheric landings was NOT going to be in the game at launch, and would be something they would look to add at some undetermined point after launch, this means that the expectation that atmospheric landings would be in the game at launch is based on absolutely nothing, which, in turn, means that FDev are in no way obligated to change their plans to rush atmospheric landings into the game simply to satisfy the massively over-inflated sense of entitlement of this particular person.

Language gives you many beautiful tools like adjectives, adverbs, and many others, to express your sentiments precisely and without unnecessary ambiguity. When you are too lazy to use them, or use them incorrectly, you need to be prepared to take criticism for that and to learn from your mistakes.

More recently, entitlement has taken on a critical sense. If someone has a sense of entitlement, that means the person believes he deserves certain privileges — and he's arrogant about it. The term "culture of entitlement" suggests that many people now have highly unreasonable expectations about what they are entitled to.

I hope that helps your quest for knowledge.

Note that Rafe Zetter doesn't play the game. He opted out years ago but thinks that he knows all about it starting/replying to threads on the Forum. He is usually negative and per a game he wants to see but never plays it. So take his comments as after the fact versus those who actually play the game. Yes, he will reply with a page or more of why he knows about the game more than anyone playing it. You decide.

It was me that made the post. I am fed up of reading the forum equivalent of stamping ones feet, or holding ones breath to get attention, and demanding things NOW! It's pathetic.

"We have a saying for this in the UK..."
We also have a few more sayings that I couldn't possibly type, as the mods would permaban me.

I'm obviously aware of the usage "sense of entitlement" when linked with "special snowflakes" - but now it seems as though no-one can tell the difference between "Justly entitled due" and "feeling entitled to something that is completely unrealistic".

Can someone explain this to me pretty please?

I think you just explained it quite well yourself.

When people are simply asking for their rightful dues their sense of entitlement isn't at issue.

It's only when their expectations become unrealistic that their sense of entitlement can be called into question.

And, on a broader note, it's very concerning that certain things seem to be gaining credibility despite their utterly unrealistic nature.

Repeaters with no imagination use the word on forums as a kind of passive insult. I find it amusing when legit complaints about Star Citizen are called out as entitled.
