Newcomer / Intro Sensitivity to network problems

I haven't purchased Elite: Dangerous .... yet .... and to be honest I'm tending towards not doing so ...... but I'm still tempted.....

My main concern is with the always on internet connection requirement. My rural broadband can be slow and inconsistent .... will this cause me problems? Does the game crash (in Solo mode) if my connection drops/slows?

I see there's no demo, and I cannot find any reviews (on Metacritic, IGN, Gamespot etc) which made it difficult to make a decision to purchase - I need some hard, independent, info to part with my money (over the hype) ... and now its gone up by £5 as well whilst waiting for info, it makes me even more reluctant to purchase.....

But I'm still tempted .... lol

If your internet connection is highly unreliable then yes, you are going to have problems.

The good news is that if it's reliable but you just don't have a lot of bandwidth, then solo play will work absolutely fine.

Solo mode is pretty robust, David Braben even plays it on a train and the Internet connections on there are pretty poor.

The internet connections in Solo are used to synchronise things like market stats etc, there isn't that much data passed over as you play the game so it shouldn't be a problem, however only you really know how bad your Broadband is. What speed do you get on something like Speed Checker?

You should be okay with very little bandwidth. Like Martin1956 said, Solo mode really doesn't transmit a lot of data to the servers - only for missions, exploration, etc. The big bandwidth users are Open Play with 30+ CMDRs in the same instance.

Oh dear - looks like my decision is made for me - thanks for your response.

I get about 4 mbps which I presume isn't a problem. However my connection can drop periodically. I'm about 2 miles (by road) from my cabinet.
What happens when the connection drops (in solo mode) - does it revert back to an auto save?

I don't think speed is my issue, its more reliability.....

Just done a quick speedcheck (I didn't close things down, and I am on wifi - so not optimised)

Ah - not allowed to post image/link yet - it shows:
Download 4.86 Mb/s
Upload 0.58 Mb/s
Ping 20 ms
Server Manchester (~200 miles)

I might ask my ISP to decrease my sync speed (increase target SNR?) and see if that helps....

Don't touch your sync speed, its optimized.
Track down your reliability problem first.
9 times out of ten it usually is a mechanical (physical connection) problem.
Use Cat6 cable if you're on ethernet, have a good signal strength (if wifi) and make sure your cable/phoneline has good contact.
Is it ADSL or Cable?

If its ADSL its possible that your connection from the cabinet (we call them GWIs or OPIs) could be suspect.
Is the problem common in your neighbourhood or only you? Compare your speed/reliability with others near you using the same provider.
Perhaps you need a tech visit to suss it out.
Being Canuckian, i'm not sure what the process is over the pond Eh

Good Luck

usually if your connection drops, you'll get a pop up that says "unable to communicate with matchmaking server" or something similar; when you reload the game you'll be at the last place you "zoned in" - either a station or outside of it in normal space.
