I think now that we see their is a good number of commanders who are in favor of "proper fleet mechanics " I think we can discuss some of the mechanics we all would like to see.
So I am going to make a list of Basic mechanics and we all can discuss them.
1- fleet Communication- chat,mail
2- fleet beacon-just like the wing beacon
3- fleet storage- ability to share resources
4-fleet missions
5- fleet tags
6- fleet property- station,outpost,spaceports
7- fleet registration- being able to manage the recruiting and removal of commanders from the fleet
Now I would like to point out these are just some mechanics That came off the top of my head. I am not saying what is good or bad. All I am doing is listing some of the mechanics I would like to see so we all can discuss them.
1. Skype/E-mail - check
2. Reasonable, though if your Fleet are also your Friends, you CAN see them on the Gal Map.
3. Nope. Uh-uh. - Let me join your fleet, I really want to help defend the Earth. Share me some of those Packhounds someone bothered to unlock, oh, and Corvette and a half-a-billion credits. Ok, bye guys, I'm off to join the Empire league now. Return what? No way, these were gifts. See the problem?
4. We barely have enough working normal missions, and no real co-op missions. Potentially unworkable due to how the mission system works.
5. Buy a ship name plate and put it there - coming in 2.3
6. Not even the Fuel Rats have their own stations, outposts, spaceports, etc. No player or player group is important enough to do this. Form a minor faction and function this way, accept your NPC's and the fact that no one is meant to make their money this way.
7. You can, see #1 above. Granted, there's nothing to stop anyone from impersonating someone else, but then there's nothing to stop anyone from doing that already.
That's 3 out of 7 that already exist, or will exist, in some form or another. Two that absolutely should not exist, and one that, short of redesigning the game engine, which is unlikely in the near or even mid-term future, cannot. That just leaves the Fleet Beacon, which can be worked around, making the final score 3.5 out of 7. That's more than Explorers have gotten.
