Serious stuttering issues - any fix?

Just getting into Elite again now that my Rift S has arrived, and I'm experiencing some serious stuttering issues every time the game loads assets. It seems to me like it happens when either sound or textures are loaded in. I can sit still on a planet, looking around, no problem. Take off, and as soon as the ships computer starts talking I get stutters. Same for supercruise, stutters around stars, stutters around planets, stutters into supercruise, out of supercruise, basically any time anything new happens.

I am quite confident it is not an issue with my system, specs are good (i7-9700k, 32GB Ram, 2080Ti, M2.SSD) and other games run fine (hell, even Escape from Tarkov runs pretty much stutter free!). I will try to reinstall Elite on a second SSD disk instead of my main system disk, but that is pretty much all I can think of.

Any help would be appreciated, this is making it close to unplayable in VR.

Attached my ED Profiler settings. The thing is, I'm running a rock steady 120fps in non-VR, and 80fps in VR, apart from when everything freezes for close to half a second and then starts up again. Pretty sure it's not a performance issue

I have an index, and reprojection or motion smoothing kicking in and out can give me a similar thing.

What happens if you lower the normal supersampling to 1.0, after all only the hmd supersampling makes a read difference in vr

Running everything on ultra with a 1080TI oveclocked to 1750mhz, 7700k oveclocked to 5ghz, CV1, 90fps. Your rig should me smashing through those settings, only issue I see is you have ambient occlusion turned on. Turn it off and report back.

I can run in non vr with AO turned on, no issues.. turned on within VR I get stutters. The difference in visuals between on and off is tiny.

OK, this is weird. I tried messing with the ambient occlusion settings, no difference. I ran Task Manager on a different screen this time and kept an eye on it, every time Elite stutters I get these dips in GPU loading, as if Elite simply pauses and doesn't give the GPU any work to do. Really weird :S

I seem to get an odd thing where the frame rate readout says 60FPS (or 180 or so if I turn off limiting) but... even though the frame rate isn't dropping technically, I still get juddering from the image - like it's drawing the frames behind the one I can see at 60FPs, but displaying the same one for too long.

Sometimes this even happens when it stays on the same frame until I alt tab back out, but the game is running in the background.

I'm reinstalling through Steam now in the hope that I can finally force the stupid launcher to install on my D drive (another SSD) and not my C drive. Thinking it might be some disk access issues going on :geek:

Do you have any maximum frame rates set anywhere in nvidia control panel or in game.

I have seen shudders in ED when the fps limit is below screen capable limit

2D performance on D: drive, almost dip free. Very very strange. Installed through steam, but still using ED Profiler for settings, so nothing has changed there. Will give it a try in VR now and see if this sorted it.

Right, problem solved, no more stutters with Elite on my D: drive instead of my C: drive, even in VR. Had to go through steam to get it to install on a different drive, but at least now it works. Strange mind you, and it sucks for someone with just one SSD drive, but solved for me at least :)

I had exactly the same problem on a 5700xt and ryzen 3900. The oculus drivers seem to be updating a lot at the moment, maybe twice last week, the latest update seemed to cure the stutter.

It's fine now, but the problem did get so bad I almost hit stars coming out of jumps as it took so long for the lag and stutter to clear.

Why are you running supersampling above 1.0? It will supersample your screen image as well. For best performance use HMD image quality (or the equivalent in your headsets software) only.

Hey @Viking84!
I'm having the exact same issue as you, my Task Manager shows the same as yours, and I don't know what else I can do here. There was a time where I plugged the CV1 display to a powered usb3.0 hub and it seemed to be fixed, but it got back again the past week. I'm not having any issues with other VR games like iRacing or RaceRoom or whatever. I was planing to get an additional PCI usb 3.0 card to connect the Oculus system there and let the other usb3.0 for my X56, which has ghosting problems (solved by an external powered usb hub) but as they share the same usb bus I thought that was the problem. But yesterday I unplugged the HOTAS, restarted the PC and the problem remained, even in the main menu screen where you see your ship docked. Moving my head around caused mini-pauses, reflected on the Task Manager.
So I have Elite installed on my secondary HDD drive, and now that you mention that, problems started to happen when I moved my Steam library from the C (SSD) to D (HDD) drive. Do you think moving it back to an SSD drive could solve the issues? I noticed that my GTX1070 had some kind of "pauses" by its noise when the frame dropped, the exact same way as yours...

Thanks for sharing your experience, its one of my main games, I'm out in the black far from the bubble and now it's unplayable :(

Some of your stuttering issues might be from loading and graphics, but I found that 99% of the stuttering I was getting on the rift s was my USB ports. Tried usb 3, 3.1, 3.1g2 no dice. When I converted my 2070 super's VR link to a USB 3.1g2? Perfection. Absolutely fixed everything. You might want to look into that. I spent about 10 bucks on a dongle.

The other things I do are set my monitor to a mucb lower setting because I dont have any need to drive those pixels when Im not looking at it (but merely turning it off doesnt stop your card from rendering them).
I also supersample, which obviously wouldnt help you but if youre accidentally on a supersample without realizing it you might want to tone it down. I just do 1.4

Having the same problem tethered via link on Quest and running Elite through Oculus software. Everything runs fine for 10 or so minutes then I get a frame freeze for a second or under and a brief glimpse of the hourglass spinning. I've had this problem on and off for a LONG time now. Turning off.net services seemed to remedy but caused issues with other things.

I noticed recently that if I bypass the tethered link connection and connect my Quest via Virtual Desktop and run Elite via SteamVR rather than through Oculus the stuttering disappeared.

**EDIT, stuttering came back.
