Seriously? ... Another "Why can't this be like that other game thread"??

Please excuse me this pre-second cup of coffee rant.

Scrolling through my morning reading today I find not one, not two but THREE posts about how Elite Dangerous needs to be more like another game that the Thread Owner likes SO much. Really? Then GO. Load up that other game you like and play it. For the last two years these forums have seen some awesome posts ranging from How To's to serious debate over the existence of man in the universe at large. We have seen funny posts, screen shot posts (usually ending up as part of my ever growing wallpaper collection, thanks CMDR anikaiful for starting that monstrous thread that STILL isn't a Sticky) and GOODBYE posts. The one group of posts that I usually skip, but still occasionally read, are the whiny Why Can't This Game Be More Like Blah. I don't think I have ever wanted to shout at someone "Shut up and enjoy what you have" as much as when I read these dang things.

Short Answer: Because this isn't that game.

Shorter Answer: Cuz.

No, this game, at present, isn't (big gasp of air) EVE, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, World of Warcraft (for market place I assume?), Kerbal Space Program, Freelancer, the entire X series, Limit Series, Space Engineers, Freespace 1 or 2, or any of the Star Craft games. And thank the lucky stars it's not. I like the originality of ED.

But I can understand why someone doesn't like it. I can understand why someone wants it to be like another game. I can. Somethings I do not like about ED. Somethings drive me nutso crazy. However, like the gambler who knew he was being swindled said... It's the only game in town. And to these people who constantly are complaining I say this: Go to Kickstarter and make a plea. Create a list of what you want your game to be, detail out what your expectations are and what goodies you will give out for the different levels of donations. Don't worry if you don't know how to code or create things as you can always hire that done with the money you raise. Do these things and get your game made. It worked before, it can work again.

Where did I put my coffee cup?

Nope.

There's no shame in learning from other people's mistakes or successes and improving yourself. The world would be in a sad state of affairs if we didn't learn by example.

There's plenty of excellent features in other games that I wouldn't bat an eyelash at if FDev just unabashedly ripped them whole cloth from the source material and transplanted them in ED.

I'd actually probably wet myself with excitement, and start spamming them with suggestions on what to bring in next.

And this deserved its own thread rather than an answer to the posts in question because.. ?

For the same reason we have hundreds of posts about PvP, Open, Greifing, and combat logging.

Granted I don't actually know the reason, but I'm sure there is one. And it's gotta be awesome!;)

Well, if it was a little more like Mafia Wars and Evony (before it became a farmville clone), it would be an awesome game. ;)

Seriously though, ED is the best space game on the market. There's one other that's excellent, but it's a 4x that doesn't bear any resemblance to ED. I wouldn't want the two to try to be each other at all.

The persistent universe in ED is incredible. It's without peer at the moment and will probably be so for the foreseeable future. Let ED be ED and the others can fall where they will.

Oh, and +1. :)

Can we instead request that Elite be *less* like certain other games?

I'd like Elite to *stop* taking inspiration from: Diablo, Farmville, Candy Crush, Korean MMOs, JRPGs, and Social Media cell phone games. Steer away from that stuff and I'll agree to avoid pointing out games which are doing something *right* and which could be used as inspiration. Deal?

I like ED as ED, saying that there are things in that *cough* other game *cough*Eve that have kept it going for the last 14 years, that ED could learn from.

Before anyone tells me to go and play it then, I did for over 6 years and that was over 7 ago so.. been there done that. Oh and we had space legs bk then too.

Saying all of the above I dont even now if that other game in the OP was that other game. [big grin]

Elite Dangerous should ALWAYS strive to be its own individual game, but there is nothing wrong with implementing features that some other game has that would make this one better.
If it would work and fits in EDs specifications, I wouldnt care if they added something from EverQuest

Bag of stuff at torch 1!

I have no problems with people comparing. I DO have problems with people comparing this to a game not released and discussing features that are only seen in demos and cinematic trailers.

Elite also has a long road map ahead of them, and they are slowly but surely keeping to their word. Unlike the grand unrealized promises of some other big name developments.

Tl;dr: stop comparing Elite with unreleased games!
