Seriously? ... Another "Why can't this be like that other game thread"??

I'm amused that it affects you so, OP.

Agreed. Every great game is built in part off the experiences, successes and failures of other games. Pick your favorite game and I'll list 10 games that came before it that inspired its HUD, mechanics, controls, camera angles, cut scenes, etc.

Frontier would do well to incorporate features and approaches other games do well. Or should I say, they should continue to do so, as countless features are clearly inspired by Descent Freespace, Wing Commander, X-Wing, Diablo, Path of Exile, and so on. If other games have good ideas, use them with your own unique spin.

The idea that everything is about reinventing the wheel is a failure to understand the nature of evolution itself.

It may as well be like Monopoly, as everything seems to end up in acrimony and arguments.

That's cuz ur stoopid! WE WUDNT HAVE PROLS IF U DINT HAVE IDEAZ I CANT UNNERSTOOD!!!!1*

I think Elite: Dangerous should consist of steering and rotating coloured blocks in various shapes, so that as they fall down to the bottom of the screen, they form complete layers of tiles, which then vanish, so adding to your score.

Off topic. Love your avatar. Love your sig. Just love it. Are you from Sweden (set-up line)?

On topic, I think ED should be more like Chucky Egg. Rapidly trying to gobble up small dots whilst chased by a fat-oversized-insta-death-if-it-gets-you thing. Although to be fair, that was my experience this week in the Alliance Salvage CG.

I think there is valid scope for players on Forums to say "I wish ED could incorporate XYZ from a game" (after all, think of how many great space games you have played, and betcha they took a dang lot from Elite which was such a game changer), but yes, I do think the "I want to play game Z" can be simply moans and not constructive; and my sympathies tend towards the Ops. But hey, don't have to read them, and wouldn't want to stifle the genuine and good suggestions of what works elsewhere altho happily whether they fit into ED vision and ED incorporated them is up to ED.

You know what Elite needs: Minigames! Why can't elite be more like Final Fantasy 7!
So you want the 2.3 character avatars to look like this? :D Must admit the second from the left is a close match for me. [up]

I sometimes wish Elite: Dangerous could be more like Frontier: Elite 2. To be fair though, it is closer than any other game out there.

OP, what is wrong with borrowing good ideas/mechanics from other games? That is pretty much all I can say here... what a weird thread.
edit: also where is the poll!?

Please excuse me this pre-second cup of coffee rant.

Scrolling through my morning reading today I find not one, not two but THREE posts about how Elite Dangerous needs to be more like another game that the Thread Owner likes SO much. Really? Then GO. Load up that other game you like and play it. For the last two years these forums have seen some awesome posts ranging from How To's to serious debate over the existence of man in the universe at large. We have seen funny posts, screen shot posts (usually ending up as part of my ever growing wallpaper collection, thanks CMDR anikaiful for starting that monstrous thread that STILL isn't a Sticky) and GOODBYE posts. The one group of posts that I usually skip, but still occasionally read, are the whiny Why Can't This Game Be More Like Blah. I don't think I have ever wanted to shout at someone "Shut up and enjoy what you have" as much as when I read these dang things.

Short Answer: Because this isn't that game.

Shorter Answer: Cuz.

No, this game, at present, isn't (big gasp of air) EVE, Star Citizen, No Man's Sky, World of Warcraft (for market place I assume?), Kerbal Space Program, Freelancer, the entire X series, Limit Series, Space Engineers, Freespace 1 or 2, or any of the Star Craft games. And thank the lucky stars it's not. I like the originality of ED.

But I can understand why someone doesn't like it. I can understand why someone wants it to be like another game. I can. Somethings I do not like about ED. Somethings drive me nutso crazy. However, like the gambler who knew he was being swindled said... It's the only game in town. And to these people who constantly are complaining I say this: Go to Kickstarter and make a plea. Create a list of what you want your game to be, detail out what your expectations are and what goodies you will give out for the different levels of donations. Don't worry if you don't know how to code or create things as you can always hire that done with the money you raise. Do these things and get your game made. It worked before, it can work again.

Where did I put my coffee cup?

Well you'd be lying if you said this game was perfect and needed no improvements. People are offering suggestions on gameplay and pointing out examples of how it could work or has worked in other games. You're kind of being a butthead OP and surely overreacting. End of discussion.

that too +1

I have no problems with people comparing. I DO have problems with people comparing this to a game not released and discussing features that are only seen in demos and cinematic trailers.

Elite also has a long road map ahead of them, and they are slowly but surely keeping to their word. Unlike the grand unrealized promises of some other big name developments.

Tl;dr: stop comparing Elite with unreleased games!

You ask for people not to compare ED to unreleased games, and at the same time you draw the "ED has a long road of development ahead of it"-card.

Which is it then ?

SC hasn't released, because they know they're far from done. Just as ED is far from done ?

Aren't you just cherry picking the best from both scenarios for ED, whichever is the most convenient in the context of the discussion.

Not that you're the first or only one to do that of course, it's rampant around here.

I caught the sale on that one over the weekend, it's about time I upgraded from GalCiv 2

Good score on that. :) I bought it pre-release and got the "Elite Founder's Edition". All future DLC is included.

I liked GalCiv 2 as well. Tyranny of Evil was the group.

The only thing I can agree with is your first point because I sure as hell haven't a clue what the rest meant. Can someone younger than I please translate. :) Thanks.

But what do you expect from someone who's only had one cup of coffee? I think that was fair warning.

+1/2 to OP. Ideas from other games aren't necessarily bad as long as it's not a direct copy.

e.g Exploring systems and landing on planets is a very generic idea. Many games have them and they do it their own way. Yet if you look at it from enough far away it's still the same thing.

And then you come to elite forums where people suggest specific ideas that usually only work in specific other games and there is no way of avoiding a face palm.

Elite needs more farmvile and zombies. It works for other games but I'm not going to play those because I want zombies and potatoes to see my cqc elite rank.

There's no shame in learning from other people's mistakes or successes and improving yourself. The world would be in a sad state of affairs if we didn't learn by example.

While I agree, often, people do not agree on what is a mistake or success or which part of a game is good/bad, because it is subjective, thus you get a large amount of people arguing over those things.

Personally I'd say if people broke down the mechanics to an actual suggestion on the suggestion forum without mentioning other games, and just left it at that, for frontier to judge and use or not by their judgement, it would be much better.

What you all actually want to come back in its full splendour is Subspace
Subspace! That was it. A couple of weeks ago I was talking to colleagues about the earliest multiplayer game I remembered playing but I couldn't recall the title. All I could describe it as was "Asteroids in a maze" but nobody had heard of it. Amazed to see it's still going. I'm pretty certain I was on a 33.6kbps modem when I used to play that, possibly even 28.8kbps.
