Newcomer / Intro Server Maintenance?

Hello everyone! New (returning after 10 years) player here.
I originally bought into Elite Dangerous way back during the kickstarter then for RL reasons never really had time to play until now, so I've repurchased in the latest steam sale and I'm looking forward to getting into it, which unfortunately is proving difficult.
I purchased the game two days ago and downloaded it. I couldn't play yesterday morning because the servers were offline for an update, so I tried to log in this morning and the servers are down for scheduled maintenance! Wouldn't it have made more sense to do both these things during one outage?
I work shifts so my playtime is often during off peak hours. Can I expect to find the servers online usually, or are they often down during the working week?

Yesterday's downtime was for an update to the Trailblazer update recently released.

Thursday morning maintenance happens every week at 07:00 UTC.

Downtime for updates not withstanding the game is expected to be up for the whole week, each week, apart from weekly maintenance on Thursdays.

Surely your original purchase / kickstarter version would still be available?

(I didn't know about this game until this year.)

Probably, but there's been so much DLC and so many updates since then it seemed like the easiest way to make sure I have access to all the latest stuff. Also, the steam sale really made this a fairly trivial decision.

Thanks to the other posters for putting my mind at ease regarding server down times.

That version would only provide Horizons so Odyssey would have to be purchased anyway if wanted. But yes it should be available from the My Downloadable Products bit of the website.

Is today's server maintenance taking an unusually long time? The launcher says server status = good but when scheduled Twitch streamers (and I) try to log in, a screen pops up saying it's in maintenance. It would be helpful if the launcher showed the correct status. Nothing about it on Xwitter.

Last week there was at least this about the need for extended downtime:

I've bee wondering same. I got home a couple of hours ago, went to start game thinking I'd get an hour before maintenance, but the launcher said it was offline.

Watched a few videos, looked at launcher - seems good to go. Launch game - 'sorry, maintenance'. NOTHING on the forum.

I know it's a weekly thing, but surely there should be a thread with at least 'starting now, expected to conclude in an hour'...6 hours, whatever - just let me plan my evening

Yes, X/Twitter used to say that (up to last week) but it's all gone quiet.

I guess the plan to get the missed stations up and running from last week's partial update is not working out as expected.

It is morning for me and I'd hoped to get a few jumps in before starting work... no such luck!
How long does maintenance "normally" take?

Why does this refer to a web page for "information on scheduled downtime"? It doesn't have anything like that.

PP1 gave us 10m weekly downtime. PP2 gave us an hour weekly. Colonoscopy has now blown this out to multiple hours to install the monuments to narcissism that people wanted in their systems. Not counting the time wasted with colored snakes since that last update. These have been the most worthless updates to me personally ever.

And now they're not even notifying us when this happens. (n):poop:

The message before servers went down said estimated time: 90 minutes.
That was just over 2 hours ago, so I guess they had a delay or had to fix something unexpected.

Just a bit of patience needed (which I say whilst pacing back and forth waiting to get back in game to deliver the last cargo to get my station running)

Will it be at least 2 hours every week, increasing as more and more systems get colonised?
