Settlement Defense Plans update.

Just found that in an Industrial settlement's security office (Fontaine Chemical Workshop, 25 Nu-2 Draconis).

I'm going to be in here for a while...

yea, but they are really rare...
people reporting 100+ relogs for 15 units....

Can you do that settlement 100+ times?
It's worse at the settlements though. The data ports at IMs seem to have a very limited set of data available (at least that's how I recall it). Whereas security data ports in settlements have a much longer list. So obtaining them "naturally" is not just a longer process in terms of time between attempts (than IMs), it's also a lower chance per iteration.

From my data I have 1 SDP from a Sec port - in 64 pieces of data. So even if I was getting 5 pieces of data per base (unlikely) then that's 1 every 13 attempts. So nearly 200 bases to get the data. And each base will take longer than 20 seconds that an IM relog takes.

So maybe if they dropped the requirements down, but for 15 ....

I think someone in the UI team tried it out and said "nah, this can't be 15, I'll put in 5..." and then someone from the screw players over team saw that and went "nah, it's 15, put it back".

OK, after about two weeks of figuring it out, I mastered the grind speed run. You can probably do this in a few hours if you haven't spent weeks fooling around trying to do this without what follows...

1. Go to Alici 3Ba + 3Bb and find Irregular Markers (Threat 3). You'll need your DSS. There are other bodies in the system that can also spawn Irregular Markers.
2. Drop down and see if there are two shipping containers or three. If two, check for a crashed skimmer, not an SRV. I guess it's 50% odds.
3. If there are bad guys, use dumbfire missiles to blow them up. Two hits per space a-hole, one to drop shields, one to kill.
4. Wait for the reinforcements and nuke them from orbit. No more will come after that.
5. Land nearish the skimmer, 100m from the center of the main target.
6. Run over and check the Data Port.
....(a) No Settlement Defence Plans? Goto Step 7.
....(b) Settlement Defence Plans? Download and do a little dance for 90 seconds.
7. ESC > Exit > Exit to Main Menu. Continue > Open Play.
8. Check the Data Port.
....(a) Settlement Defence Plans?
........(i) No bad guys? Download! Do a little dance.
........(ii) Bad guys spawn? RUN AWAY! Go to Step 3.
....(b) No Settlement Defence Plans? Goto Step 7.

Summary: Your basic cycle is going to be to find a crashed skimmer and relog until you hit a Settlement Defence Plan. You can definitely do the relog cycle right at the data port BEFORE the bad guys aggro. And if there's a Settlement Defence Plan and you spot the bad guys, you'll have enough time to run back to your ship. Total cycle takes literally 20 seconds. Oh, but I forget to mention: you'll have to do this a couple of hundred times to get to 15 Settlement Defence Plans. Sorry.

I posted this in another thread a few days ago as the method I used to get the necessary 15 Settlement Defence Plans in around an hour. Maybe someone will find it useful:
  • Fly to the Orrere system and head to the "Grey" planet (where most of players were farming Push and Weapon schematics a couple of weeks ago).
  • Map the planet with the DSS and find an Irregular Marker Threat 2 (the one I chose was on the planet's nightside, had two containers and a crashed skimmer).
  • Land and sneak up to the skimmer (if the NPCs are in the area which they seem to be about 75% of the time. You can always relog until the area's clear if you don't feel like fighting).
  • Creep up to the skimmer and hide right behind it so it's between you and the containers. Stay crouched and check the data port. As long as you stay crouched and quiet, the NPCs don't detect you and you can download and relog to your heart's content. Just make sure you're crouched each time you log back in and right behind the skimmer. There's no need to engage the NPCs and waste time or ammo.
  • It's obviously going to be luck of the RNG gods as to what you get but the data port I was camping at spat out up 15 Settlement Defence Plans in about 90 minutes. I also got a lot of Manufacturing Instructions. There were also Patrol Routes, Ballistics Data and Atmospheric Reports as well if you're after any of those. No Cat Media, sadly...
  • Once your data slots are all full, creep back to your ship or SRV so as not to be detected (or relog until you get an instance where the NPCs are not present) transfer your goodies and return to the skimmer.
  • Rinse and repeat.

I did the skimmer grind today. Only found 3 of them in a whole bunch of relogging, but I did get fairly good at hitting at least two of the 3 initial scavengers that spawn before their shields go up. They’re always in the same place. I also had one skimmer setup that was on a hill, so by relogging at the skimmer nobody could see me.

I can’t say it was all that fun, but it got me some Mercenary rank and a crapton of manufacturing instructions.

I absolutely hate and ignore these missions because every time I get near the planet nothing shows up for me and I get super angsty about the time waste it was...

Same happened to me last night after Retropolitan told me the mission types. It seems quite a few mission types are bugged and not completable.

I didn't want to farm these but as Larceny missions are largely broken I have no choice. I would have preferred to do Larceny missions so there was some kind of narrative while getting Settlement Defence Plans but it's impossible until FDev fix them so here we are.

I used your guide as a basis but here's what works for me:

1. Find an Irregular Marker that has a skimmer (this is by far the hardest bit)
2. Park the ship about 300m away and deploy the SRV
3. Park the SRV about 140m away
4. The SRV radar will show you if there are mobs, if there are then ESC and relog
5. If no mobs then run/hop to the data port and download data
6. Run/hop to the SRV and board
7. Esc and relog
8. Goto 4

I hope this helps somebody.

It took me about 3 hours to farm 6 Settlement Defence Plans earlier.

It's taken 15 minutes to farm the last 5 I needed.

This site is insane, drop rate is amazing. And you can hide under the skimmer so no need to move, mobs can't see you and won't aggro.

Try your luck (disclaimer: YMMV)

Just finished my SDP grind. If I never see another skimmer again it’ll be too soon.

Not that the scavenger target practice doesn’t have its charms, but I think of better locations for that.
