Shady move over at Oculus today...

Yeah I'm looking around for a new headset. I have the old CV1, so it's getting about that time anyway :)
I could almost pull the trigger on the Index, but it takes a quarter of a year for them to ship it out, apparently...

Just get a reverb, no comparison, I have 3 Oculus HMD's gathering dust.
Spoken like a true rich privilege dude (no offense). I barely was able to afford my Rift S, so it's not trivial just to go out and swap HMDs like Madonna swaps diamond necklaces.

To the OP, it's an absolute terrible move. I don't have a Facebook account, and I never will again. They are a shady company and I just don't trust them. It's different with a forum like this or even Twitter, where I can remain anonymous, but Facebook is obsessed with knowing exactly who I am, to the point where I would likely have to provide my driver's license to prove my identity to sign up for an account if I wanted one. The idea that I'm going to give Mark Zuckerberg access to what I play, when I play, and a hardware device with microphone, cameras, and a 3D map of my house, well that's just crazy.

I hope somebody starts a class-action suit here in the States. At the very least, it's another thing for Congress to investigate. Imagine if I needed a Facebook account to use a HOTAS or watch TV or start my car - it's insanity! ESPECIALLY if this requirement was added AFTER I paid good money for a piece of HARDWARE. Screw Oculus! Screw Facebook! Screw Mark Zuckerberg!! Pizzas me off, that's for sure. #SuperAngryDuck

Now FWIW, current users are grandfathered in with our non-Facebook Oculus account, so we still get two more years of support without needing to log into Facebook. I am worried I'll be met with a nagging "Would you like to log in using Facebook?" prompt every time I use my Rift, however..

I mean, who even uses Facebook anymore? Around here it's just nosy old women who use it for gossiping. Very few men I know use it, and the kids have long since left it for things like Tic Toc and Instagram. Maybe Facebook should require an account for knitting and Bingo...

If people are that bothered just set up a dummy account and carry on Rifting.

Setting up a dummy account is a violation of their TOS. If you get reported and they delete your account, you lose access to everything in your Oculus library. I've already gotten the ticket open for my refund, it's been less than 30 days since I got it.

And Valve Cosmos, though a little pricier, is better than the Vive, Vive Pro, OR the Oculus rift S.

If you bought it less than 30 days ago, open a ticket for a refund. Use their chat to get it going quicker.

But being a racist stain on humanity who peddles lies isn't against their ToS in fact its actively promoted on their platform.

Good luck on the refund.

Fortunately, it's already in process. I had only gotten the thing 2 weeks ago, and you get 30 days. And if they try to be shady, I dispute the charge on the card and notify the BBB, and give a copy of the chat transcript (which they sent me by email but I also took screenshots of it on the support page) to the credit card company. Amex don't play around with that stuff.

From the top of my head, because I'm SO DONE with HTC after owning the vive:
  • severe problems with tracking
  • inferior controllers to both Touch or Knuckles
  • lowest fov in class
  • exorbitant price for what it offers

I'd suggest either getting the Index if fov, tracking and roomscale are any concern. or the upcoming Reverb G2 which has stunning resolution. The G2 controllers are still inferior but at least tracking seems a little bit better and it is cheaper.

Then the Vive Cosmos corrects for a lot of issues you had with the Vive. The Rift S has a FOV of around 95 to 100, the Cosmos 110. And they did have some tracking issues on release, but after several firmware updates the tracking has been solved. I couldn't comment about the controllers much, I use a HOTAS with Elite, and Elite's really my only VR game. Price? Yes, it's expensive...but I'm 400 bucks closer to it with the refund from Oculus. :D And I will NEVER make a FB account. I'd sooner give up VR entirely.

Just don't say I didn't warn you. I'd strongly advise looking into Reverb G2 as you say it will be "only for elite" - then you'd benefit from the insane resolution the G2 has. As for FOV comparison:

Rift S actually seems better than the cosmos.

Just looked at the Reverb...yeah, for 100 less than the Cosmos,

"Resistance is futile", Emperor Suckerburg whispers.

"There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to adjust the screen. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the pixels to a soft blur, or sharpen them to crystal clarity. For your digital lifetime, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your computer. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... "

Paraphrased opening narration, "The Outer Limits”
My apologies, changed to the correct series, not “The Twilight Zone” as originally attributed.

I've been looking at a new headset ( Odd + now ), and this is a killer for me. Given their history, can you imagine getting ads in your headset while playing a game.. just a little tiny popup in the lower corner " Hey, we noticed you're playing ED, would you like to join our ED FB group ? ".. ABSOLUTELY NOT.

No way in hell I am letting FB have that level of access. I had to jump thru hoops ( and security protocols ) to keep my email and other stuff OFF their platform, and they still hound me for my cell number.

I was looking at a VR headset also now I have a bit of spare cash, but my FB account is purely a dummy and the only reason it exists is because there are just a few pages I read that require me to log in to FB, my own page has never been updated. Of course that hasn't stopped endless friend requests and funnily enough I have noticed a pattern, first it started with random people, then every FR was a young asian girl, then it went to obviously gay young men, then swapped to macho car lovers and then to russian women, it's almost as if FB were trying different patterns to try and appeal to me, it didn't work of course, but this news does mean I will never get an Oculus, oh well there are other headsets and the tech is improving all the time.

I will look into the Reverb G2 myself, I do believe in thorough research before investing, I'm glad this news came out sooner rather than later.

Me personally I don't care if I have to use Facebook . They want to know about my boring life than go ahead. End of day I just want to continue getting Vr updates for Elite.
