She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

This is my current loadout.

Thrusters are still tuned clean on G5 but I'll change that to dirty once I can be bothered to grab the G5 materials for that. :D

Reminder for others, only need to buy the ship once to unlock it. You can purchase additional at any station that stocks it (as long as one of the variants has been purchased for Arx).
Thanks for the reminder. I did know that but I decided to buy both for 2 reasons - first to support Frontier and the wonderful work they're doing and secondly I'm using the Stellar build as a zero-rebuy build and the standard one I'm outfitting but with a zero rebuy hull.

It is! Seeker Red is available but only if you've bought the Mandalay 'Stellar' edition from the store...

Bah!

Knowing FDev, that probably means it's never going to be available alone.

Annoying thing is, I deliberately bought the stock ship and the ship-kit because the Stellar version has pretty-much no modules I want to use.
If I'd known Seeker red was bundled with the Stellar version, I would have just bought that instead. 🫤

Ah well, I'm sure other tasteful red paintjobs (by which, I mean not the Griffin paint) will be along soon.

For all the great things Fdev have done for the game this year (and it's a lot!) their approach to the store has been nothing but disappointing. It's unnecessarily restrictive and limiting. Why they don't sell everything they can is beyond me. Package stuff up with a slight discount, sure, but don't remove things or lock things behind specific packages. All that does is breed resentment in the consumer base.

Found a few problems with decals on the Mandalay when equipping Seeker Steel paintjob (and most likely others).
This is the Distant Worlds 2 decal, and the Golconda decal is also not displayed correctly.
(and while I'm at it, the Distant Worlds one was mirrored when attached to the left side of my Krait Phantom)

Ahh cool, thought it was just me - hope they get it sorted. Looks like the layer order is reversed or something

Seeker red is exclusive to the other Mandalay build? Seriously? If they had told people that, some wouldn't have bought the basic version but the stellar one for that reason... That way there's just disappointment, and people like me disgruntled because they really don't like exclusives like that.

I also have one genuine complaint about the Mandalay, and I might be a bit annoying with that one, because it's literally the only thing ruining the otherwise perfect machine: The freaking searchlights I can't switch off!

I make a lot of screenshots when out there, like, I'm sure, many explorers do. With not too much stuff to do out there (nudge, nudge, shove, shove, punch, punch), the photo album is kind of an occupation.
So, when I'm on one of those beautiful and dark planets I do ship-in-front-of pictures capturing the landscape, awesome skylighting and my wonderful space ship as well. I have uncountable awesome screenshots with that motive, but with those Mandalay searchlights, they will all look like this now:

And that's just ugly and looks like a lighting glitch.
Apart from the fact that those lights don't really serve any purpose...

So, what I'd love is, of course, a button to toggle those. But what would also work splendidly would be making these lights part of the main ship light, toggling on and off with it. If I want light I push the button, otherwise it's darkness and time for beautiful screenshots.
There. Rant. It really annoys me a lot.

Otherwise this ship is a dream.

Yes! Yes! Really big Yes! These lights always on are really annoying and ruining not only screenshots, but also immersion during night-time stealth action. Frontier, pls make them a part of main ship lights. It just makes sense.

There are theories that dirty drives have equal heat management as clean drives, or better. But i have tested many explorer builds in the past and clean drives handle heat much better. I did tests by engineering two identical models clean and dirty, thermal spread on both, and using them in the same ship, asp explorer, anaconda, Dbx explorer. I tried jumping while still scooping, or even just comparing the scooping temperature, and also maneuvering and initiating jumps in high g planets, and the clean drives were always better. Nowadays with the sco superdrive i bet there will be a difference there too.

So unlike internet theories, maybe check if you prefer clean drives for an explorer ship. These days it is much easier to find the mats, and it will make a difference over a long expedition. Plus for me it is a min maxing thing.

Apart from that, i used to have my explorer builds only capable of one boost at a time (in case of a wrong estimate while landing), but these days with exobiology it makes sense to have boost more often, and also to have a decent shield and not the lightest you can fit. So i have upgraded my distributor and shield choices a bit. But still i don't think i'll be going for permaboost. On the other hand, it's nice to have some danger while exploring, i have fun memories from doing dozens of jumps with 15% hull couple of times..
Regarding heat management; it's dependent on the power plant.
A cold runner will pair clean drives with alow emission plant which runs considerably colder but will be heavy. Where heat isn't such a concern I'll pair dirty drives with overcharged/Guardian power plant for light weight, high speed.

I can‘t fit a class 6 cargo rack. It says, the module exceeds the ship‘s mass. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Class 6 shield (or any other module) works, but no cargo rack.

Anyone the same issue?

Check the stats for your drive.
If it is G5 dirty / drag the overall weight of the ship may be too high. If that is so, changing the experimental to Drive Distributor will gain a chunk of extra capacity. (if the drive is undersized)
