Shield Booster should generate a LOT more heat!!!

Effective shielding is the total amount of damage needed to bring down shielding. My 'Vette's base shields (7C Biweave) are 630MJ, plus 2x7A SCBs (each totalling 3,250MJ). and a 5A in reserve (1,00MJ). 630 + 3,250 + 3,250 + 1,000 = 8,130MJ.
G5 A grade HD SBs give ~55% to base shields, I run 4 HDs and 2 Res, so ((55x4)+(20x2)=260%)x630) = 2,268MJ (1,638 increase). 1,638/8,130 = 20.14%. So not quite <20%, but acceptably close considering it was off the top of my head.

lol
you should learn math again: 1,638 / 8,130 = 0.2014 = 20.14%
this way says your unboosted shields have only 20% of your boosted ones.
your boosted shields is actually the inverse of it: 496%

in other words, you're "hardly out of control" boost is a factor of ~5 or and increase of ~400% *

and thats just your absolute increase, since you have modded the resists too, which will add another large amount of "Effective" hitpoints against ontop of it against non-absolute damage weapons.
just to remind you - 50% resist translates into a factor of 2 for the EHP for the respective damage type.

also, what many do not get into their brains - the diminishing returns starts at 50% for some reason: every % above 50% is worth more EHP then one below.
75% resists translated into a factor 4. so for

*I have to ask my boss for such an insignificant payrise at some point... [rolleyes]

Nar, I'm still pretty comfortable with its validity.

If you want to be snide about it however, the same could be said for your grammar.

Grammar? is that something to eat? :S
i hope you did not only read that part you have quoted now, since that was just a quick re-quote as introduction.
and i did not critizize your "math-grammar", but your formula...

Its as if you think these things don't already come at a cost. Yes, a properly engineered big 3 niche ship can sit in a hazres, I aslo did this with a D grade conda with turrets, PVE is too easy right now, and thats why. If they added heat to these shield boosters it should be minimal, which btw already happens due to the increase in power draw. more power draw = more heat in case you didn't know, if we didn't have those shield boosters we could be getting away with a grade 3 low emissions powerplant easily, so yhes, they do cost us heat. by having those shield boosters, yes our 39 mil rebuy ship is more tanky than your 6 mil rebuy FDL, such is life. Frankly, I think the diminished returns for the heavy duty should come back in a SMALL way but, not nearly as bad as what you are suggesting.

I'm honestly still trying to figure out why passive shield boosters are utility slots and active shield replenishment is an internal module.

Shield stacking IS kind of silly though. If the % increase is multiplicative with each increase, rather than based on the base shield number, then that's why. If each booster adds it's % to the original shield and not to the other boosters as well, we avoid that feedback loop of ever-increasing increases which leads to the min-maxing we sometimes see now.

How problematic is it? Depends on the popularity. Is it the real cause of the problems we face? Hard to say, but I doubt it. Many of ED's problems stem from several combined factors; this is probably one of them.

While I completely agree that shields are a big problem right now, I don't think heat is the issue. All that will do is put further emphasis on efficient low-heat weapons (I.e. multicannons) combined with mega-shields as the defacto apex build. The ridiculous importance of keeping 4 pips in sys already puts way too much focus on capacitor-light weapons as it is.
I agree. Shields need something to curtail them, and Heat's not the solution.

Instead of Heat, why not have it increase a Systems power drain?

Not enough power, slower shield recharge and can't fire off those SCBs.

That would be a fair tradeoff imo.

It's also the fact the an A class grade 5 mod shield booster gives a bigger boost to a FDL shields then a sidewinder shields even though they are exactly the same. It makes little sense to me. Why should a ship which already has great shields get an even better boost then someone with a smaller shield when the booster is identical.

This exactly.

At the very least, if the boost amount scales, the power / heat cost should ALSO scale.
