Ships Shield generator question

Hello! I'm attempting to engineer either my DBS or DBX for exploring (probably DBX). Can I remove the shield generator under core internal slot and just put a few in the utility slots? Is it essentially the same thing? I was trying to free up another slot for some cargo space, assuming I would need for limpets?
Very new to the game, but loving every minute so far (except the planets 500,000ls away from jump point)
Thanks!

Shields go in 'optional internal' slots.

Core internal slots: You can change size (in some cases) and grade, but you can't remove anything from Core slots completely.

Utility slots: are for, well utilities, fairly limited options.

Optional internal slots, you can put in anything that fits, completely remove, whatever you like.

Have a look at this and have a play about with it.

The utility slot modules are shield boosters, not the generator. If you remove the generator there's nothing to boost.

You can undersize your shield generator if you just want to have a thin one for toaster-rack-scrapes and planetary landings without using one of your class 4 slots.

Shield generator: Optional internal that gives you your base shield.

Shield cell bank: Optional internal that, when activated, restores your shields when weakened(but not broken).

Shield booster: Utility slot only. Increases your shield’s base value.

.. and you're probably better off without limpets on a DBX - if you need hull repair while out exploring you're doing it wrong, and you'll learn faster if it's not repairable. IMHO. When you move up to a larger explorer with more slots, then pack some limpets (which you probably won't need, as you learned how to avoid needing them in the DBX :) )

Eh, I lithobraked just the other day in my DBX on my fifth planet out of six harvesting G4 raw materials from the crystal sites. While I could have easily flown home on 50% hull it was nice to have the option just in case I nodded off and pancaked on the sixth planet as well.

Which is why I say don't fit them - the experience will stick with you and you'll stop trying to slow down using your face :) Same with heatsinks - very optional on a DBX (and most other ships that run relatively cool).
