I see so many problems but I also see so much awesome. Source?

Also I'm very glad to see the potentially upgrades aren't just "10% faster fire rate" or "5% more shields", we are actually getting new and interesting weapons and modals, let's just hope they don't all seem a bit meh and useless like almost all the ones from PowerPlay

EDIT: Decided to expand my opinion beyond this one line.

I'm all for having a sort of support ship / weapon / utility in Elite. Sure in PvE it'a pretty much useless unless the AI heal each other and the player or you have a buddy to heal you but in PvP it changes the dynamics a bit. Potentially if the effect is to little, it won't matter and players will just be able to out DPS the beam. If the effect is too much then players will have to focus the healer, which for example it is a Federal Corvette spamming SCB, might make the fight near impossible to win. By the time you focus enough fire on the Corvette to kill it or make it run, the other ships in their wing could focus fire and take you or your wing mates out. If you focus fire on one ship, the Corvette could boost it's shields making it invulnerable.

I think a good balance would be to make the weapon very thermally intensive to it can't be used continually with Heat Sinks (eventually they'll run out) and would also stack with the overheating from the use of SCB. Also 2-3 players focusing fire should be able to out DPS the beam, making it still viable in PvP unless the person is being fully focus fired upon.

Potentially they could go the other route and make it drain the user's shield, but I feel that'd lessen the viability to the point where people just wouldn't use it much in PvP.

Yes but only if it works as follows:

Takes own shield strength and adds it to the target. The ratio is 2:1 (So, 20 MJs drained, 10 MJs provided to avoid shield tankes making nimble ships invincible)
The ratio is increased to 3:1 at 2000m or more.

Does drain a slight amount of WEP energy.

Has no effect on shieldless targets.

Should NOT work like every weapon tha tdrains the WEP capacicator and so generating MJs from nowhere. That would be a somewhat OP SCB.

We will see how it turns out, no clue currently, but considering you likely won't be able to heal your own shield, it requiring a second person it wouldn't really be that bad, you just take out the healer first as in other games with healers? think a little tactic?

Will be an interesting alternative to HRP meta at least..

Wasn't there a joke thread about a year ago where someone was asking that FD adds healing lasers, because he was his clan's healer in WoW and wanted to keep doing the same in ED?

Edit: oh wow, this is actually official and not a photoshop. I guess then it should be a bit more nuanced than just an FDL with four of these lasers buffing a cutter. Sandvich!

Overall I think I like it. Could be applied in a lot of wing configurations. Might mean that in some wings a fighter might not need to carry SCBs if there's a support vessel with this upgrade equipped. Perhaps there will be some mission types where an escort could be equipped with stuff like this to help protect a valuable target. And of course this is just one glimpse of probably dozens of these kinds of upgrades, so who knows what the full picture will look like in terms of balance. But on the surface I think I like this.

Love it.

I hope it's *any* ship though, it's called "Friend or Foe" but the text says "strikes a wingman's shields" implying you have to be winged.

I want to be able to drop in and use one of these on an NPC! Perhaps in a distress beacon scenario.

Having to be winged would put arbitrary limitations on it, I like stuff without arbitrary limitations. =p

Maybe if it is like this there is a good reason for it?

That's the scenario I'm thinking of also ... a rescue or escort type of mission where we need to protect a target.

Will be interesting. If has no turreted version you have to face your teammates all the time which mean that you can't deal damage to enemies as turrets are really bad (if they don't buff turrets). Hopefully we get more viable builds to take into combat.
