Shield Regeneration Lasers

Well as I'm not in to PvP or Fighting Wings - not something I would buy, also if I'm shooting my hard points at my friend then I'm not shooting at a common enemy! Don't get it really. Rather a Hull repair tool attached to a ship launched fighter to patch up my Conda

I guess I'm almost alone in disliking this? Adding more defined RPG-style "roles" doesn't create new gameplay possibilities in the long-term. It creates a lot of options in the short term until a new meta is defined, and then the increased ability for specialization morphs into a requirement for specialization if you want to be competitive, simply entrenching the meta and limiting choice.

Games will always be metagamed, and there will always be an ideal meta, yes, but you can control the extent to which this meta dominates.

Turning a space-combat game into having tanks, DPS, and healers, unless incredibly finely tuned I suppose, is simply going to increase the extent to which metagaming dominates non-meta loadouts, and I do not think that's a good thing at all.

The "holy trinity" concept is what holds back D&D-style RPG's, not what makes them great. What's next, a CC laser?

Wow, interesting. Should produce a requirement for some innovative new tactics.

For all you "nay sayers" - embrace change, try not to fear it!!! - LOL

We have tried this sort of thing for years in EVE Online. It´s been part of the meta there for ~10 years. That´s why I asked in the thread about how powerful this thing is.

There are several considerations here that are as of now unknown:

1) Strength of the healing effect?
2) Cap drain of the healing effect on the user?
3) Does it transfer shield MJ:s from the user or does it just generate shield MJ:s on the target?
4) Can you use gimballed or turreted weapon for this?
5) Will the game have some sort of offensive electronic warfare gameplay coming up? If sufficiently powerful support effects are added and only counter to them is MOAR DAMAGE/PEOPLE... It can drain the fun out of the situation quite fast.

And more will pop in mind later, I`m sure. This type of thing can be a meta-changer, or almost completely useless.

We will see how it turns out, no clue currently, but considering you likely won't be able to heal your own shield, it requiring a second person it wouldn't really be that bad, you just take out the healer first as in other games with healers? think a little tactic?

And if two players heal eachother? I am totally against generating MJs. Only use your own shield gen or SCBs. Otherwise you would simply negate damage which turns out to be an easy peasy mode for beginners in a wing.

For example 1v4s would simply be impossible then as you can't focus someone down anymore. It would turn out into a "mass over class" meta. The ones with the most jesus beams win.

Maybe this could finally mark an end to accidental npc murder, by just healing non-targets. Nice.

Effectively sees an end to single players taking on NPC wings, though.

I see in this future 2 cutters as "medics" and 2 FDLs causing massive damage. No thank you, neat idea I just dont like the concept and possiblities.
Bring more guns take out medics? bring your own medics? what is so bad about that?

1vs4's would generally be impossible anyway? as long as yes, it isn't 1 experienced vs 4 inexperienced people? other then that, and it already is mass over class? at least as I see it? people already gank single people with multiple ships? and the single person really has no chance? so how will this change it?

Guess you haven't been a healer in any other generic MMORPG then, eh? C'mon, feel the great new game play! ;-)

Seriously, this seems pretty lame to me for reasons others outlined above. It might make sense for a specialized repair ship (Maintenance Rats?) but to be available to anyone (who finds the Engineer anyways) and then to not even replace the regular beam laser, but to allow you to use it in dual mode, seems somewhat overpowered and silly to me. We've got healing potions (shield boosts) I guess we needed healing spells too. Sigh.

Bringing a classic MMO Healer/tank/DPS mechanic?
I am... conflicted.

As a wing thing I kind of love the idea. From a general point of view, considering what the fight in Elite is and what it isn't, I am not that sure.

Once we have AI wingmates and ship-launched fighters, this could really be a neat thing, though.

Not really the classic states because a lot of ships can do a lot of different things, but what they also will become able to do now, is healing, right now we only have by your analogy tank/DPS.

You guys so scared of healers. Every second the beam is shooting wingman is away from enemy.

Stop worrying guys or well get more vultures that cost 6mil. Frontier guys are professionals and they know what we need, not what we want.

I like what I'm seeing. Shield regen beam? Sure, mix that with a mission to protect a high value NPC until they get to a station and you've got new stuff.

That's only an item. All the outfitting have multiple variables on them, I hope those are all able to move around with give and take.

Easier than you think.

Don't want to show of my e-peen but why do people think that their Anacondas makes them invicible against cheaper ships? It's the pilot, not the ship :)
