Shield Strength

Anyone know how strong shields actually are. This screenie shows that the only change between a G6 and E6 shield is weight and power draw. I have to assume it's better, but by how much, exactly?

your guess is as good as mine, but if you still want an answer i would say that difference between those 2 gens is not noticeable.

integrity, shield gen optimal and maximum is what you should be looking at and those values are same.

Thanks for the guesses. Hopefully FD will provide some more specific stats. I think they want to avoid theorycrafting, however at release a little bit more info would be required to justify a 5M upgrade and significant mass increase.

So im fumbling around with my Cobra and noticed i could swap the shield gen around to another internal compartment. That way i could slap in another class 4 cargo rack and place the shield gen in a class 2 compartment, which would have to be a class 2 or lower generator. So what would happen if i put in a generator with only 5-15t of optimal or max shield gen while my ship weights 290 tons...:S

The game won't allow you to. If the shield is too weak for the ship, you can't equip it. Same goes for thrusters. Not sure on FSDs (haven't tried it).

Folks - IF you change the class of ANY of your equipment and get killed - you have it coming.
Your ship comes with classes for equipment - use them.

This is or will be a got ya maybe not today BUT you will get caught.

Items placed in your ship have reasons.

Andargor - buy it !!!!

thats why asked before doing anything, which i didn't, because the whole idea of flying around without shields just to maximize cargo space doesn't really appeal to me. guess i have to make do with 40 tons for the time being, not seeing that many of these 50 ton cargo runs anyway.

Because mass will affect ALL things your ship does, from your jump distances to your maneuvering capabilities and speed, I would think that adding a shield like that to anything short of a tank oriented Anaconda would be a bad idea.

Unless mass only affects jump distances, in which case GET ON THAT FRONTIER!

That thing is a beast. Possibly the letters are a placeholder system, or maybe we're going to get some more information on what they mean eventually. I say you do some research, then buy it and study the difference!

My take on this is that they will give you identical shields as the have the same nominal and maximal tonnage, but that the E rated one weighs 48T more and draws 50% more power... so by upgrading to the G rated one you have extended your jump range by making your ship's overall weight less, and left 1240 more units of power available to operate other equipment such as heavier guns or higher rated scanners.

Edit... tho that doesn't make any sense because it's claimjng that E is better than G even though all the stats are either the same or worse. Odd.

Second edit. Changed my mind... there's no stat on there that reflects shield strength... so we just have to take their word for it that an E rated shield is 5000000 credits worth (AND worth the decrease in jump distance and available power) stronger than a G rated one. More data required please FD.

If it helps, I've put in an uprated power distribution module and noticed improvements in the performance of both shields and weapons... so uprating does have an impact.
