Shields Required?

I realize that technically shields are not required. But I had thought I read somewhere that they were only useful against energy weapons. I probably misunderstood but, I was under the impression that if you were going to explore, and did not expect any combat, that you could forego shields. But my experience has been exactly the opposite. In fact, based on what I have seen, I don't understand why shields are not in the core modules section. The slightest contact (even reasonable landings) results in loss of hull integrity.

Just wanted to find out if what I am seeing matches what others have experienced or if I am missing something.

Thanks,
-Neil

You're not missing something. For non-combat activities shields are nice buffer to prevent hull damage from small mistakes. You don't need a big heavy shield generator though. A lightweight D-rated module will do (set 4 pips to SYS when in danger of collisions).

BTW for combat shields are most effective against kinetic weapons (+40% resistance) and explosive weapons (+50% resistance). Energy weapons do a lot of damage to shields (-20% resistance) but a bare hull is still quite vulnerable to energy weapons so shielding is needed unless you configure your ship as a hull tank with hull reinforcements and military grade composites.

When exploring, one is generally no where near any other ship, thus no shields are needed to avoid damage. Being mindful of landings mostly by paying attention to the "G" level of the planet, one generally doesn't need shield either. I only install the smallest "D" rated shield generaltor and a small AFMU, just in case. If your anywhere close to being deep space. There's NO WHERE to get them. Don't forget, the biggest fuel scoop you can install. Saves time while scooping, thus avoids over heating mishaps.

I've flown numerous runs in my Type 7 without shields. I'm quite good at flying, so I rarely dent my own hull. I have been hit by "scrammers", which is a 2.4 bug where NPCs run into you while trying to scan, but if your ship has a tough hull like the Type 7 has, it's not a big deal.

Caveat - I normally run shieldless in either private group or solo. There are plenty of bored CMDRs out there in open (current CG is infested with them today) ramming and shooting everything in sight, especially when a CG takes place in an Anarchy system.

Players engaging in combat with other players in a combat space game.....who could've expected that?

I run naked most of the time. No need for shields out exploring. Spend a fair amount of time in silent running when I'm smuggling. I don't even shield my Python when hauling legitimates. Without shields my skin is more sensitive and I have to fly better. When I'm not in my Python I'm usually in my Viper IV, again, no need for a shield.

Last time I got killed for not having a shield it was in an (albeit A-rated) T7.

The only time I wear a shield is if I'm looking for a fight or flying a slow, clumsy ox.

I detest the current nuke-tanking shield mechanics. The power creep changed the nature of the game and added too much sense of safety and reliance on them.

The only ship I run with no shields is my Type-9, which is only used for cargo hauls and mining. The rest of my ships have shields.

Can you tell me more about the nuke-tanking shield mechanics? I could really do with those given my experience in the current CG which you can watch here;

I love the bit at the very end - well done! This CG (the one in the bubble) seems particularly "dangerous". I visited just to do some "people watching", and I lost my cheap Viper to a player Corvette sitting right outside the mailslot. I know it's an Anarchy system, but I thought even here stations would defend ships in close proximity. Apparently not.

I hate to ask - but were you loaded with valuable cargo when bought the farm? Insult to rebuy injury if so.

While I don't like griefers, I'm actually okay with what's happening at the current CG in the Bubble. This CG is for a faction of self-proclaimed anarchists in an Anarchy system, so the 'griefers' are actually making the system feel "dangerous" as it should be. I do think the station ought to protect people inside its no-fire zone, but otherwise one could say the game is "working as intended".

Only 496 tonnes of superconductors =]

I've been on a downward spiral of losing money in ED for so long now I honestly didn't think about it. As long as I have rebuy and a little operating capital for trade I'm just not bothered. It will take me so long given my current modus operandi to get the rank to buy a cutter I am sure I will have a healthier bank balance.

I totally agree with you about this CG though. Part of my presence there was to see how the ol' space cow would hold up against at attack. Not well enough it seems!

It's a lot safer to dock and use the free camera to people watch outside.

Otherwise, I can see that you were just unknowingly part of an impromptu game of duckhunt ;)
