Ship explosions look pretty bad

You want realism or you want dramatic effect?

Hey If it's worth doing, it's worth _over doing_!
I want a huge BOOOM!! With a million particle effects that cause a frame-rate stutter. Combine that with a big low-frequency rumble that will wake the neighbors. Also I want to see debris float-around forever and be a navigation hazard to anyone else flying in the area. What did the ship weigh? 120-tonnes plus cargo of 100 tonnes? Should be 220 tonnes of junk floating around.

People are spoiled by Movie effects. You do realize most of what you see in the movies is not how a "real" explosion would look like? They intentionally add extra fireball effects to make it look big.
 
I love the explosions, I don't see any issue with them (when they work right and don't just disappear). Also love the debris and various reactions of the debris. Some of them retain the ship's shape, while some of them scatter, and after a recent update they are destructible too.

I love the ship explosion in ED. They look very nice, and the new shield animations are awesome as well.

The shield animations are great. I'm always torn between admiring them as they come back on the enemy, and yelling...because they came back on. :)
 
Nice splosians

I have a post entitled 'nice splosians' with a few funky sploding ships. I think they look ruddy great. As with almost all aspects of the game, the sfx are in a constant state of development and refining. I have played this game since alpha and I'm continually astounded by the ever increasing beauty of the game and it's overall fabulousness...
 
Homeworld 2 still has the best space explosions IMO. Relic's explosions/muzzle flashes/vfx in general are absolutely stellar in every one of their recent games I've played, and I would definitely not mind FD taking some cues from those.

I like them as they are. FD should go for the dramatic effect, not for realism as far as I am concerned.
I would like ships to have more dramatic randomized multiple explosions before they are finally destroyed... especially the bigger ships.
 
I agree ship explosions are really disappointing. I would prefer something like this (spherical bright flashes):

Also ships shouldn't necessarily explode every time their hull integrity reaches zero. I'd love to see ships simply breaking up or floating "dead" through space riddled with bullet holes without any fancy explosion ever occurring.

Those spherical bright flashes look like the ship explosions in the old Elite. (At least in the Amstrad CPC version). Who knew that that game was THAT realistic.
