Ship models that change based on components

A while ago during the early development phase of Elite, much talk and concept art was had regarding ship components, and how their class affected the look of your ship. Examples shown were different kinds of cockpits and thrusters. I was just wondering if anyone knew what became of these, they seemed quite cool.
 
I dunno about a must, but it would make ships very distinctive. Considering the amount of extra work it would entail though, especially given that different paint jobs are available for ships, I am surprised it was ever suggested at all. It would be nice to receive some closure about the feature, and despite common sense I'm still holding out for its eventual implementation.
 
Can't see this ever happening.
Ships aren't modular.
For the most part the original concept art wasn't showcasing different possible configurations of a final ship that it would be possible to choose between. It was showing possible designs for the final ship.
Some of these different designs had varied configurations for things like the cockpit canopy.

There were other designs showing potential configurations for the big ships, the Anaconda having different hangar modules for example. But the outward design remained the same.
Some of the ships could have modular components cf. Anaconda. But the smaller ships, no. There's just no room for it.
At some point in the future it may be possible to customise a ship, we already have limited capability now, but I can't see it ever being possible to change the basic design.
