Ship Name Profanity Filter Suggestions

Morning FD, i have an idea/request!

The ship naming is great, but as you may be aware, it's also got one hell of a strong profanity filter on it.
Names like ASSASSIN or ASSAULT, get turned in to ******IN, or ***AULT. Plus many other legitimate words are being needlessly filtered.

So i have two Suggestions,
First, let us turn the profanity filter off, requiring the account password to do so, for child safety. (Optional).
Most players are plenty old enough to not care anyway, so options are good.

Second, is let us submit words which are being incorrectly filtered for you to "blacklist" from being filtered.

Thanks!

What about the Children really.....I think Parents need to get a license to propagate.

Because you can't be bothered to explain the birds and the bee's schools do but when they explain it in away that you disagree with you complain, when someone uses profanity in front of your child you tell that person off rather then explain to your child that sometimes people use profanity and there is a time and a place.

Stop asking everyone to do your JOB.

Here's a tip if the world is not soft and fluffy for you, drink some cement and harden up mate.

I don't have kids... Lol

Nor do i ever want one of those creatures. Creepy alien things. Urgh!

FD clearly has some sort of obligation to censor rude words.
I couldn't care less what someone names their ships. But the current system is kinda broken.

I don't recommend drinking cement to anyone.

Assassin is impossible? Rofl.

That reminds me of the old days where I played Ragnarok Online and at one time they had the glorious idea to implement such a trigger happy filter too.
Except there was a class called Assassin you could play as, was fun trying to talk about it when the filter constantly shot your sentence down :D

Seriously though FD, what's with the stupid filtering? <_< either make it properly or disableable (is that even a word?)
The fact that my forum name does not match up with my commander name is a result of your excessive filtering nonsense too btw.

Whoever back in PB2 or so when naming was added allowed me to use my usual name, which I've btw used EVERYWHERE else too without running into censoring issues, was more generous (aka sane) than the forum which just went "this name is inappropiate, please choose another".

IMO, if someone is old enough to play this game with enough competency to undock, go into SC and target other ships, they are more than old enough to know all those words anyway. They probably use them at school all the time.

Reminds me of the old Eve Online forum filter where words such as cockpit and scrape got filtered into ****pit and sc****.

Being realistically here, if Assassin is so much of a bad word that you can't call a ship that then GalNet has way more than one article that needs censoring IMMEDIATELY. Someone think of the children! Which somehow get into this game...

One of these days I might run out of sarcasm, ED uses up so much of it.

I bet you love it if you did have one.

I think they need to leave the profanity filter on. But maybe a topic pointing out words that should not be block.

Care to give an actual reason that doesn't start with ch and ends with en? Hint: was recently mentioned.

Question though, is the comm chat censored? If not, why censor ship names?
If it is, why? It's not like you come across people non stop and talk in bad words (regardless of them being censored).

I'd dare to bet that the majority plays either solo or in a way that is equivalent to solo, like deep space exploration. Which takes even more reasoning out of censorship.

But that's just my opinion about it. It's true in the end, their game, their nonsense :p
Like speedlimits for spaceplanes *cough*.

Yes I have my who nephew playing Elite Dangerous. He dose not need to see profanity.

Well if someone are comm chat and was using profanity I have no problem reporting them. We even have a option in main munu to report a player.

Don't let him on the internet then, or go to school. Because that's where I've learned all of mine. School actually kicked it off as I grew up before internet was a common thing.
I'd say it's better to tell him how to deal with and ignore it rather than going with pretending it doesn't exist but he's not my nephew so yeah, your call.

So why have it different for ships then?
Why shoot first and ask questions later (if at all) rather than determinating first whenever or not shots are neccessary?
Just let people name their ships whatever they want and if you get triggered put them on ignore, and assuming their matchmaking system works as advertised you will never see them a second time.

On the other hand, it also shows what FD thinks of their playerbase, a bunch of immature brats which can't hold their tongue. Mhm. Might be actually not far off.
I don't see atleast a lot of objection from the mature portion that can handle language.

I think my intentions for the filter are being misunderstood here.

I could not care less if someone's ship name is entirely profanity.

My issue is with the the filter itself. It's clearly over zealous, blocking works like "assault", which are perfectly fine in the game chat, galnet, ship descriptions, etc, but as soon as you name your ship "Assault", it's censored. Even the default Federal Assault Ship is censored as a name, but not as a description!
This is clearly wrong!

I just want it taking down a peg or two, or if that's too much work, a toggle to disable it completely for us grown-ups.

One of my ships is named STELLAR ASSAULT, after a Sega 32X game from 1995...(also known as Shadow Squadron).
To everyone else, my ship is named STELLAR ***AULT... Lol
Yet I can type all the profanity in the dictionary in to the local chat, without censorship.

That's pretty much the issue, it IS not trivial.

Either you got with a blacklist of words, where people will whine about them missing out on some. Sooner or later anyways. Also people will rather easily get around them, like @$$.
Or you go with match filter which is what we have. Those are the easiest and the most annoying because of demostrated reasons. Which can also be avoided in the same manner. Atleast unless someone adds a character alias list.

To make the latter not as "stupid" you'd need a whitelist of words, which is the inverse problem of the first.

And given that chat appearantly is not censored at all, even though the forum is, we're back at usual FD inconsistency :D
Adding a toggle to disable it is the closest to a fit-all solution you can get.

If someone's languaging, just report (and block) them. Where's the issue with that? It's not like this game's crowded to begin with.

But you've actually given the best example (which I mentioned before with Ragnarok): when you add a filter that censors names and words you used yourself (as the developer) in the game, you really screwed up :D

I would prefer to just have an option to disable the filter.

I have only ever seen filters cause more harm than good. It saddens me to see that FDev wasted valuable development time (money) on this instead of working on (fixing) other things.

On the bright side, filters have helped me to learn of new curse words, because they "*" out things in normal words that I did not know was a curse. Thanks for the education!

How about an "I'm an adult, I am big and ugly enough to deal with possible offensive language" tick box.

Because some people choose not to get faux offended at every little thing, and realise that this world is made up of all sorts, including children masquerading as adults who like fart jokes.
