Ship naming filter at it again

In a similar vein, I just had the rpg video game Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura delisted for sale on Amazon because they apparently classify it as a starting pistol.
Living the Orwellian nightmare here.

Another shoddy programming job, but this time much more advanced. You have probably fallen victim of machine learning error. Contacted support yet?

how about to the politicians, they are a strange sub-species of humanity most of which think they know better than the average human when they actually know significantly less (especially in the UK). ;)

Oh the scums know better, only they care about how to get elected again instead of, you know, important stuff.

Also sure cats can be lovely (if you are a masochist and enjoy being cut mercillesly), I am just deeply offended by ship name "gone to the dogs" and want it censored ;-))) Alright you got me I'm a dog person ;-)

Ok, so i have a green spangly Krait Mk.II, that i named 'Cucumber' and the name is banned. It won't show up in game as it is offensive due to three letters in the middle of the name. Really??? Seriously??? The naming filter in game is overly sensitive, this just proves it yet again. Oh we musn't offend anyone , we must all be politically correct. Well here's a newsflash for you, i'm offended. I'm offended at the over zealous naming filter, which if i wanted to, i could get past really easily, but i'm not that childish.

Anyway, back on point. So my ship name is banned for being named after a vegetable for god's sake. While i'm seething over this in game, i'm flying around doing stuff when i came across this system. And this isn't offensive at all is it?

How about "Cucomber" spoken with a Colombia accent.

Naming things to be clever stops when you realise you're an adult, but I don't figure that will happen for a while yet, so until then you need to have a nanny, oh! but how good does it feel to get one over on the nanny.

I am sorry to inform you that your permission to ride the High Horse (TM) has been revoked. If you can't keep childish insults out of your posts you're not allowed on the moral high ground.

I don't understand what the fuss is about really. It is FDev's game, they make the rules, we just play it. If they wish to 'censor' anything and everything as is their wont, that is fine.
If a player doesn't like their rules...

yeh, I'm tired of seeing stars for ship names. I'd rather be insulted. This is just stupid. How is it like this for so long?

It's about seeing stars instead of the word Cucumber. Did I help? :)

As for if we don't like the rules...we can try to change them! Imagine that! Millions of years of evolution has taught me that I am a human being! I have the power to instigate change in the world around me, I have thumbs to allow me to drink coffee in the morning and communication skills to articulate when I find something unreasonable and propose alternatives to those things (such as censoring of the word cucumber, and implementing a client side profanity switch). :)

Millions of years of evolution to teach you..... I thought I was old! ;)

If we all proposed 'solutions' to something we considered 'unreasonable' there would be a terrible end result, surely?

So many 'proposals' for 'change' are put forward on this forum that if the developers spent time considering, then implementing all of them, there would be no updates...

To bewail the inability to use words 'proscribed' by the game makers makes a change from arguing about PvP/PvE or other 'high-volume' topics I suppose.

(Just continuing the discussion as it is more interesting than other topics :) )

ETA: Then we have this as a banner on the forum:

Elite Dangerous

400 Billion Star Systems - Infinite Freedom - Blaze Your Own Trail

Maybe 'infinite' should be repaced by 'limited' for the sake of accuracy....

You have no permission to give or take, you're just another poster... sorry to burst your special person bubble!

Oh, I wasn't talking about your official permission of course. Just your permission within my special bubble.

Lots of 'free speech' and 'censorship' outrage in this thread. The right to free speech means the government can’t arrest you for what you say. It does not mean that that you can say anything you want anywhere you like. When you are on a private forum (like this one) or in a video game (like ED) you abide by the rules set by the owner/creator. Your 'rights' have not been violated. If you come to my house you behave in a way that I find acceptable or I ask you to leave. That's my right.

I agree that the blocking of the word cucumber is unnecessary and I would be inclined to open a ticket asking for it to be whitelisted. Whether it is or not is still up to Frontier though. You may not like or agree with their decision, but it's theirs to make. Your statutory rights have not been affected.

Or, you know, it could be an option, like it is in most other games of this ilk (filter profanity on/off). What's more, I think you've misunderstood the nature of complaints, I saw only one person mention freedom of speech which works exactly as you say it does, in three pages of posts. I see people complaining about the code that decides what's profanity or not; specifically, the idiocy that means that any word that happens to include some iteration of profanity in its makeup, is summarily made unreadable. Even this forum seems to do it better...

Mishitting...check.
Scunthorpe...check.
Circumvent...check.
Penistone...check.

There's two reasons for that. The uncharitable one is that Frontier didn't write the forum software.

But people are likely to put more effort into getting a naughty ship name than gaming the forum, and it's going to remain unreported and undetected until it does offend someone.
Does the ship name allow all Unicode characters, or just Latin-1 ? Because by judicious use of, say Arabic or Herbew letters, as word separators you could get a bad name through the forum filters. But you can do the same with accents, so it doesn't gain much.

Elite Dangerous is not an adult rated game. in order to stay that way it has to have some filters in place. Adding an option to the filter would lose it the 'Teen' rating as the kids would be the first ones to turn it off.
Which is also a good point. The forum does not necessarily have the same age rating or legal responsibility as the game.

Given the average age of elite players, would you like to rate the intelligence of that decision? I can... ;)

Ignore the average age - it is not relevent to the game's rating...
Alternatively: Internet play is not subject to ESRB rating is used as a common argument too....

But IRL Frontier are the decision makers and 'naughty' or even 'potentially naughty' words will be censored or not :)
