Ship naming filter at it again

Usually people would determine what is an acceptable ratio of false positives and false negatives.

Not a single one must slip through? Imho rating Elite for 7 y.o.s is ridiculous anyway. We have slavery, drugs, murder, toggle-able chat, but ship names that could make you giggle are a no-go?
Yeah, I'm sure ship names would be used exclusively to make you giggle.

So you agree we should be able turn the filter on and off, just like for chat? :)
I did just show there's a difference between chat and ship names, right? Ship names show up in more than your HUD, they are also on rendered objects such a nameplates. Ship names aren't just text. There is a reason they're handled differently.

As much as we can argue that ED shouldn't be rated for 7 year olds or too much whisky shouldn't make me hungover, does anyone really want this prioritised over the other stuff that needs fixing? Is this really worse than that annoying stutter or rubberbanding NPCs in open?

Or should someone just raise a support ticket for any false positives.

The fact that somebody in this thread launched into a rant about free speech is ' embarrassing.
Oh look! Filter in action! It was YOU ALL ALONG! :p

Rant incoming, so "to protect the children" I will wrap it in a spoiler tag :p

People please stop making excuses for shoddy programming. Having them rendered or not means nothing to the engine. It's just a text string and your browser can render it in 3d without breaking a sweat... See here! They are not magically rendered on Frontier servers and streamed to your computer. Your computer gets a ship name in a simple json file, over the network and renders it. Magic? As you can change it anytime, remember? It's not like it's painted on some real surface and etched with a laser for eternity... Stop embarrassing yourselves ;-)

This is just a very lazy intern-type implementation which is dumb as an act of making a baby (see what I did there?). The reason we're discussing it is because it's stupid, and a total facepalm moment when you try to name your ship something as innocuous as "cucumber" and seeing the game incorrectly interpreting it as an offensive term. As in the game failing at basics again. As in we asked for this millions of times and can't get a SENSIBLE reason from frontier on why it's implemented as badly as it is. Because IMHO there is none, it behaves like a script cobbled up from bits and pieces on stackoverflow. To make matters worse, we do have the same filter for chat, toggle-able. So somebody couldn't be bothered to implement the exact same logic in other place. Which is understandable given a track record of under-delivery strongly hinting at skeleton crew of maintainers. A hundred people my derrière 😂 And the reason is we're bored, because game became boring after thousands of hours of waiting for "the exciting thing just around the corner" and it never materialising.

I personally hang around here just because for my wife I'm checking what's happening in Planet Zoo - which seemed to have a healthy developer crew and a successful beta - and I keep seeing threads like this in the "what's new" filter. Because FDev having created a "1:1 Milky Way simulation" cannot spare a few pennies for a webdeveloper to install a ready plugin to xenforo to ignore forums . Or even build a customized one from scratch. It's a forum software, not a controller for a stage-1 rocket engine for making a baby's sake...

So yeah, discussing funny fails of yet another game module is a pastime like any other on this forum. You know that any "new shiny promised land era exciting large team working on" gibberish isn't coming for another year now. So, I find discussing it perfectly valid as discussing for example the really-hard-to-materialise fleet carriers. That's what's adults do. Discuss.

It should be other way around. The aforementioned Overwatch which is played by kids all ages and adults alike, has both of the stick ends covered - has a profanity filter and also has a reporting system where you can report offensive in-game names. Also it being the competitive shooter with a teen / PG12 rating, it has one of the most toxic player base rivalling only this forum's zealots... And yet I very seldom see slip-ups in player names, usually around free weekends when anyone can make an account. And I report them. That's what is should look like, people should be reporting slip-ups, not teaching the system that cucumber and Agamemnon aren't swear words. Couple that with a shadowban for offenders for a preset time and you're set up. But no, no can do.

As for "prioritising" (which has a funny meaning on this forum even British natives struggle with ;-))) ), to just anybody working in software development, this project smells of neglect / spaghetti / maintenance. And you can rage all you want about the marvels Beyond did etc., but the bug tracker tells the truth, so do updates reintroducing old bugs etc. So unless the game is undergoing a total rewrite in the New Gibbera, expect these to prevail like they did for years now, like the wingman drop bug...

The only thing that gets fixed fast is when the BGS generates a way to skip over the timesinks put in place by someone who measures play time as a KPI, completely ignoring user churn. That gets patched FAST. And sometimes credits get "confiscated", as in accounts are manually tweaked if one is to believe the forum posts... never happened to me though and I was legally hauling Sothis' biowaste hundred of lightyears in my pre-Cutter time :D Scrapped that T9, nothing ever could get rid of the smell :p

Congratulations one and all. By my count this is post #115 in this thread which is about 110 posts too long.

Cast your thoughts back to what originated this mess - that's right a Commander wanted to call his Krait 'Cucumber' and the filter didn't like a couple of letters in it and said NO. The Commander then had two options: Option 1 - create a mild rant thread which of course bought out the worst in some and has waffled on now with no conclusion in sight and has achieved absolutely nothing. Or the Commander could have take Option 2, penned a nice polite email to Customer Server explaining that he wants to call his Krait Cucumber and can they pretty please do whatever is needed doing so this can happen. And from all accounts, Customer Service would have granted his request, although mildly confused on what anyone would want to call a Krait a Cucumber cos they don't look anything like a cucumber - but who are they to judge.

That's your opinion, I am actually having fun wasting time here  Especially with "think of the children" responses. Where 96.2%* of the playerbase remembers the original from 1984 😂

* There were 1% more, but, uh... you know... circle of life.

Both options are perfectly valid. Especially on an internet discussion forum, a discussion about funny fails like that is what makes the otherwise the walking dead forum alive [opinion]

I know a dachshund named "Cucumber". Owner thought it was funny :) A dachshund for reference:

There is of course a third and sensible solution... pick a different name!
