News Ship naming – transmission intercepted.

- No included basic nameplate. No money, no nameplate.
- Your ship name will not appear in another person's HUD unless you pay money.

It's a paywalled feature, in a full priced paid for game.

Yep. New ground here for Frontier and Elite, a new precedent set. Every other cosmetic item has a free and default version, now except for nameplates.

F.F.S.: This was a PROMISED feature.

It sure was, to the kickstarter backers no less.

And it is such an important and integral feature that i really can not understand why they dont include a basic plate into the game paid game.

That one's easy to answer: it's 3 PM so it's time to milk the cows!!!!

I look forward to seeing other commander's ship names out and about, but don't expect to see any names on any of my ships. Out of principle alone I can't pay them for this kind of behavior, and if this is the trend going forward for Frontier Store content and new Elite Dangerous features, well that would be a real shame.

I see the KS FAQ's been updated.

Just for info, I was a KS backer. Purpose was to prove enough interest in ED being made and to raise some of the money for Frontier to develop and publish. As Star Citizen KS backers have found, there's a risk in doing that (paying up front) but it's nothing like the risk Frontier takes should there be any delay in development, since they're the ones who have to fund, all of that. FD having a pool of money behind them buffers their cashflow against unforseen development delays so you'd have to ask majority of backers whether they seriously object.

Personally I don't object or I wouldn't have backed (a developer who doesn't try to protect my investment in their game) however ... I ALSO prefer ship names, chosen by players in game to be in keeping with context in ED 3303 where possible, which free naming doesn't promote. Are you more likely to think of a 'good' name if you paid for the privilege? I think you are. More likely to call your ship *&%%&%*% if there's no barrier/incentive? Probably.

Fundamentally different to other cosmetics because you don't have to be in visible range to transmit your ship name (cosmetic, because it alters how other people see you in the game) with a free name plate. Otherwise, your ship's name is just for you (write it in the UI) or, if it's screen shots you're after, then any free name plate should only show on default paints because otherwise you can't really argue taking a principled stand, unless you reject all forms paintjobs and decals too? There's no middle ground when it comes to ship name showing on scan.

I am happy to support FD through paints and all, but ship names should be free.

I agree: Basic ship names should be free. Fancy nameplates they can put in the store for purchase, but the basic no-nonsense one should be free. Our ships don't come stripped to the metal either or our commanders naked. A basic feature should not be walled off behind a paywall. Only cosmetic items should be there and ship names aren't cosmetic items.

Phew!

Hi everyone,

There’s been a number of questions from Commanders regarding ship naming and how ship name plates will work so we wanted to give you a little more information about how these features will work when they’re released.

In-game ship naming

When you have named your ship in-game, your ship name will appear in multicrew grouping and in your HUD. In addition to this, in beta 5, when other people scan you, or target you in space they will be able to see your ship name in their UI. This feature will be available for all players of Elite Dangerous (both base game and Horizons players) including Xbox One, upcoming PS4 release and PC Commanders.

Cosmetic Ship Name Plates

The ship name plates will offer an added layer of cosmetic personalisation for Commanders wanting to wear their name with pride, much like paint jobs and other cosmetics currently available in the store.

Name plates will be made available in themed packs. These packs will contain three designs, each of which will be available in three colours: black, white, and grey. This makes a total of 9 nameplates per pack. After purchase, each pack will be available for use across all of your ships (Ship launched fighters and SRVs don’t have name plates) and each pack of 9 variant plates will be coming into store at just £2/€2.5/$3. This means that purchasing one pack of name plates will allow you to use that style across all of your current and future ships, at the same time and rename each individual ship as many times as you like. We believe this flexibility offers Commanders great value and is a great way to help support the continued development of Elite Dangerous.

Thanks!

Frontier has disagreed with you, and agreed with the majority of us who were “complaining”:

So apparently there is a middle ground after all?
