News Ship naming – transmission intercepted.

No it went popular because it conformed to a standard basis of arena shooter that some games have been copy/pasting for years. Different genres. Also once it suckered tons of people into pay for it then it went free to play and gave the existing players minimal recompense. Easy way to boost numbers for the following cosmetics spree.

haha TF2 was like 20 dollars at launch.. i dont think they got "suckered" to play a game with free updates and free servers for years before it went free to play.. but OK i see where you're coming from now.

Rebel factions appear to have obtained secret information regarding the naming of ships and adding those names to Commanders’ hulls.

We can confirm that this information is correct and naming of ships is a feature that will be added to Elite Dangerous: The Commanders (2.3). Everyone will be able to rename their ship for free in game and there will also be the option to purchase cosmetic name plates which will allow Commanders the ability to display that name on your ship’s hull via a special decal. These additional features will be made available in the near future with a catalogue of designs. We’re looking forward to seeing you display your ship names with pride.

I can also confirm that the character limit for ship naming is determined by width.

Have a good evening.

I have a sneaky suspicion that it`s THIS which has delayed the patch. In the stream he said this was coming `later`, not in this beta release. Good stuff.

My only gripe about hull naming being a paid cosmetic, is that this means it will almost certainly have to be entered in a station with outfitting. When 2.3 finally goes live, I will be ~10-20 hours of game play from the nearest station.

I'm ok with paying a few bucks here and there for cosmetics, but why do I have to wait weeks to be able to use them?

CMDR grnbrg.

Doubt this would delay the patch. Pretty easy to do in a few lines of code, perhaps a little more annoying having to move around some of the imagery and give spaces to this aspect as well as the buying aspect for the plates on the outer hull. But over all a considerable more amount easier than one might think.

The delay is likely due to three major errors.

1) Passengers squatting in ships.
2) Missions failing seconds after taking them.
3) Planets that we land on all being sand colored.

Something you pay for, you are a little less likely to abuse

Says who? You? I'm pretty sure all cmdrs in pink gunships and puke green asps using purple 80' lasers will use very colorful names for their ships, even if they pay 5€ on nameplates.

Elite: Dangerous was never pitched as a pay-to-win game, very much the opposite.
Selling Ship Skins, Decals, Bobbleheads and other cosmetic items in the store were always part of FD's plans to raise extra revenues.
But sure, blame the [evil] Kickstarter backers.

Yeah...

Evil Backers made me buy this game
Evil Backers made me buy ship names
Evil Backers they're so......evil
Evil Backers they all look like Weevils!!

Actually Weevils look a bit like.......Thargoids!!

Sorry, its been a long day burning through F5 keys.

Throwing us a bone? :)

That will make a lot of people happy for sure.
Throw one more please ;).

How does any other game company fund servers? By selling games.

What is with this bizarre narrative where FD are a tiny, underfunded studio that didn't just release a second successful game, and they cannot afford to keep the servers up (P2P servers at that) without constantly nickel and diming their userbase?

Selling games funds development of the game. I think you'll find that in every case, any game that requires ongoing servers to function, they fund it through either adverts, micro-transactions or a flat rate subscription. Even so-called "free to play" games are only free to play up until a certain level - then they expect you to buy their VIP pass or whatever to continue past that point.

Also, in the context of the gaming industry, Frontier are actually very small for an indie self-publishing company.

\o/ woot! :D

Because it's a basic feature that many other games, including F2P games, give you for free. Because 'ship naming' implies an actual name on your ship hull. Because Elite and Horizons are full price. Because ship customization is a core tenet of the game and locking pretty much every visual customization behind a paywall really hurts that aspect of the game.

I wouldn't have a problem with paid fancy fonts like comic sans or something, but locking basic block lettering behind a paywall is a scummy move.

Have some rep.

Not really. Valve have ~60 more employees than Frontier.

Valve have Steam though.

I get what he's saying. In comparison to the likes of Rockstar, Activision, Ubisoft and so on, FD ARE small. What he's not getting is that FD are not bottom of the barrel indie developers with a few employees and a shoestring budget.

OK, i'm gonna say this again, because people refuse to listen.

Elite Dangerous is a full priced game. It is NOT F2P. Same for Horizons. Did you get them for free? No, you paid for them.

THIS is where a game development company makes it's money..

So where is it written... this full price game definition?? Once you give a company money they have to keep giving you new stuff for free, just doesn't make sense. I will give them money each time they "produce" something new I want, that simple. If you don't want new stuff don't pay them for new stuff.
