At the moment we have to use utility mounts for extra scan types and module space for discovery scanners, interdictors, ecm and docking computers.
Why not replace all of these physical devices with software versions of scanner upgrade.
Eg. You equip your ships scanner with a wake scan software upgrade.
To compensate for loss of modules to shoot at to disable a certain utility the main scanner damage effects usability of the software upgrades.
Eg. Main scanner to damaged for docking software to run.
The result would be more space for Hardware (cargo, sheild boosters, srv, fighters, hrp, sheild cells) etc.
