Ships for Mining

i have suggested something that increases cargospace availiable on mining ships, and reducing collection time.
and that is basicly replacing the pointless collector limpets with something different...

I don't see FD buying into it. Limpets themselves aren't great, but I think we will be stuck with them.

These are what I consider to be the main issues with limpets:

  1. The delay on deploying a limpet is too long and unnecesary
  2. They are too slow, particularly prospectors
  3. They regularly freeze up, probably due to the "refinery full" bug
  4. The flight path is too long for no point. I think this was programmed for fuel limpets
  5. No way of filtering what limpets collect
  6. The way the modules scale is completely ridiculous, this affects collectors most of all
  7. No engineer upgrades that are useful to miners (lightweight is irrelevant with a full cargo bay, shielded is pointless)
  8. Too many different types of limpet controllers now, more generic controllers might partially explain why some of the modules are so huge for so few active limpets
  9. Limpet synthesis is clearly not intended to be useful to miners. The fact that FD originally included 10 tin in the recipe shows how little thought they put into it

If most of these issues were addressed, mining would be in a much better place.

mining payout is tied to cargo space and collection time.

Mining payout is based on how much Fdev say you can earn for (insert any minable mineral here)...if they upped the amount of money you earned from each lump of cargo then all would be well with the profit side of things. Im not going to go mining for pennies...whats the point?? Theyre never going to agree to the supa grinder machine you keep mentioning...that would mean they admit the collection limpets were a bad idea and that they were wrong. Thats never going to happen.

The very brief time i had mining (to unlock an engineer) the limpets worked well and it was actually quite relaxing and engaging to be checking the refinery and making adjustments here and there...if this supa grinder machine would be added to the game then mining would simply devolve into a point and shoot and go make a brew gameplay and thats something they do NOT want you to do.

Wouldn't a Type 9 fit this role? Horrible jump range, but massive cargo space for mined goods, limpet controllers and a fighter bay for protection (in addition to turrets)?

Actually a Type 9 is not a great ship as a miner. They wallow. Mining needs a bit of finesse, with maneuvering around during mining operations and for escaping pirates.

Id rather Fdev spend the time creating more worthwhile things for the game. There already is an in game mechanic for mining and the collection of the "chunks"...theyre called limpets. If anything, the only thing they should improve for mining is the payout. As it stands its pointless doing mining for peanuts...increase the payouts then i may consider it as a profession and not just another obstacle to overcome for the unlock of an engineer.

There are tremendous discrepancies in game between all professions for payouts. People that like mining will tell you that it can be good money. After doing a little I can see that if you find the right mining zone, you can do OK. But so far the only consistent money I see in the game is slave trading. I can make around 9-12 million per hour doing that.

I am curious what you consider more worthwhile than my suggestion. Just because there is a mechanic for the profession does not mean any specific ship currently is really great at it. You can use any ship for passengers or fighting or hauling, but obviously some work better than others for the roles. That is why there are role specific ships for Exploring, Trading, Passengers and Fighting. Mining should get that too, as a legit stand-alone profession.

Mining [...] as a legit stand-alone profession.

Mining as a legit stand-alone profession, consistently outperforming your slave trading:

Solution for dedicated mining ship :

Ship with multiple hatch all over it and equipped with SLF recover materials :

The ships could look like a brick with hatch all over it. This way drones don't loose time to get around the ship to recover materials. It could be equipped with the so old requested tractor beam also to tract down very close materials.
It'll also be equiped with mining SLF capable of droping material directly in hatch has it opens.

It could do everything straight testing materials composition, laser beam it, scoop it, just by sating on it directly !

Finally we could have a dedicated mining ship !

If SE pistons had ever worked right, I would have made something that clamped onto asteroids, and extended a spinning arm of harvesty doom into asteroids.

But no, they basically self-destructed ships who dared to fly with them. They got fixed a little, eventually, but by then I just used small ships with fixed modded drills, and offloaded into refinery bases. Works much better, since when the thing spazzes out and explodes, you just print out a new ship with a modded welder. Also, more maneuverable.

My builds inevitably descended into a server-killing megaship built with absolutely zero regard to planning or aesthetics.

Cool, idea, but with pirates, the nickname for that rig would be "THE SITTING DUCK!"
