Wording is important, however.

Engineers used to use "recipes" now it's "blueprints." There's a reason for that.

Remember, a game isn't just the sum of its code and mechanics. Language matters if you're creating a world. You could have released the original Elite without the thick lore-packed manual and it would still be the same game, but it wouldn't have had nearly as big an impact on players. And how the fiction "works" does matter if you're going to have things that extend beyond the game (such as books, comics, videos, etc. set in the universe).

You're right that it doesn't matter much from a certain point of view, one strictly focused on gameplay, but as a writer and editor by trade, I see how it can matter a whole hell of a lot down the road in other ways.
Thank you! I never even considered it that way, very well put.

Did they actually say the fighters would be 3D printed?
Or was it just a casual comment and the fighters are really kits that need to be assembled?

@kofeyh - you're making me depressed. Oh why is FD ruining ED? [sour]

Who's saying they don't?
Maybe the blueprints are expensive or licensed.
Or maybe its a gameplay feature that has no bearing on the Elite universe.
No one is saying it. It is obvious because they are not available. Starports could 3D print 100's of F63 Condors in a matter of minutes.

Although this could be a good explanation for the capital ships spawning endless fighter, I'm not a fan.

No... you take as many fighters with you as you can fit and in each of them sits a pilot that CAN be killed if their ship is blown up. That's how it originally was supposed to be, and that's how it should be. You want to fly a fighter yourself, own up to your decision and go out in one, risking your ship getting destroyed and you being stranded in a fighter without warp capabilities.

As far as I understood it, SRV's are just remote controlled too now so, sure why not?

Then behaviour of SRVs don't have any sense. (Why the computer lands the base ship? I can do it better) Why can't turn off
my SRV and get back to it later while setting down a 2nd srv on same moon?

Many scenarious that will contradict this.
The SRV is moved by a Pilot in SRV (multicrew portion to come here) the Ship is flown by Autopilot.
(we already have one here but was discussed in a nearby thread).

Regards, Miklos

There are already Auto Fabricators as a commodity, which I had already assumed was the tech behind Synthesis

Licencing, and size of Auto Fabricators prevents anyone from Auto Fabricating Anacondas

The Pilots Federation has a licence for the SFL and is in negotiation for allowing members to Print SRVs

I suspect SRVs will become printable when there are multiple types, giving reasons for multiple bays.
In the mean time multiple bays allow multiple SRVS

When they become Printable, you would still have a reason to fit multiple bays if there were different types to put in each bay.

If ships can be 3D printed then so can commodities and that pesky trading mechanic that wastes so much time can be removed.

Replicators ftw

Replicators ftw

Still need the base materials for the printers right?
Not the dross matter to energy to whatever matter you want of Replicators

I will give an example why fighters crafted in ship might be the only way.
As we all heard from FD it's unwise to go for exploring without proper defense since aliens are about to be reveled. So it would be wise for explorers to have even fighters with them.
But what happens if you give the fight of your life out there and after surviving you fighter gets destroyed?
You will probable left defenseless 1000's of LY from the bubble. Then when the next incident happens .... Boom...
Total waste of time.
Of course you can't go back and buy another one from the bubble
Also i have a question will the damaged fighters be repairable and how?

I wasn't being entirely serious ...

but now you mention it we can reduce that pesky time wasting whilst scrolling commodies list to:

Replicator sludge - 1cr

Replace it with "the fighter is stowed in parts and is assembled when needed in the shortest amount of time". There, the dev has his shortcut and your disbelief is suspended.
