Should I aim for sub-targets when fighting small enemies?

technically gimbals are less optimal for subsystem targeting due to the sway.
when you target a subsystem you'll see a small red square subtarget marker on your chosen target, that subtarget is as fair game to fixed as gimballed.

edit:
that said i don't bother with subsystems until target is Asp size or a high rank cobra.

Well gimballs are precise enough for close quarter subsystem targetting,
and they automatically correct their aim based on the targte's movement.

A pilot with gimballs is a pilot with one less thing to worry about.

granted, just want to demystify the idea you NEED gimbals, i personally use gimbals.
