Should I clear save?

So... hopefully... around Christmas, I'll be back in the game.

A year ago my PC blew up and rather than repair it, I decided to hold out for a new PC (if I repaired it properly, it's running, but no graphics card and the CPU fan is held in place by the surrounding wires, I just know it would have been moved way back in the list, a couple of years maybe and it was already struggling with new games, thing has been running since early 2012). This was slated for March, but various other things got in the way and it kept being pushed back and pushed back. Now, it's *definitely* coming for Christmas(ish).

I'm wrangling with the idea of with all the new stuff, a clear save or continuing.

Jeff Ryan is likely forgotten (if ever known) by a lot of you, but he was moderately well known in some circles and he has a story and he's part of a community he founded (the Prismatic Imperium). A part of me wants to see if that story goes anywhere.

Another part of me is tempted to take this year-long break to have a fresh start, new goals, back into just being an explorer with a new character.

I'm honestly not sure where to go with this as both are appealing in different ways, and I've been running this over in my head for three months now.

Thoughts?

You'll be getting back into the game at the early part of Chapter 4. There will still be bugs and you never know what FD will nerf (by design or oversight) this time around. I'd say keep what you have for now and make sure you can get it back before you clear your save.

Or as has been mentioned above, just get another license.

I've not been able to reset a CMDR since before Gamma....

.... and every time I feel the urge to re-visit the new player experience, I wait for the next sale - and scoop up a new CMDR (or two).

I use to develop attachment toward my characters in game so it would be difficult to me to clear save. If you have a history with your character, maybe just create a story that will explain that break. Stranded somewhere far away and only now able to return to rebuild position? Some illness that prevented you from participating in the latest things but you have that one last thing and nothing will stop you from it...

I'd go with continue.

I started a new account on Saturday last, my main CMDR is out near Colonia (and likely to keep heading out from there) and I wanted another in/near the bubble. Having fun flying around in a Cobra and doing 'little' missions - I'd forgotten just how good the little ships are!

OP, if you can justify a 'new' account I'd recommend it just for the 'newbie' fun to be had :)

I've done it a few times and its surprising how quickly you progress once you've gitted gud.

Now with all the rank, engineer and permit unlocks I have plus rep with my pet faction across multiple systems I wouldn't do it.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
It's easy to 'simulate' that experience by just flying some smaller ships and whatnot. With all that you'd lose by doing an actual reset (faction rep, super power rep, engineer unlocks, etc.) I'd be very hesitant to actually hit the reset button.

That said - it's really down to what you want to do, not us. :D

OP, it depends on what you own I guess.

I have a fleet with engineered ships that took quite a while (years) to build.
No way I'm getting rid of those.

Not to mention the rank-grind I had to do for the Feds and Imperials or the engineers.
Not doing that again.

I would rather get a second account then clear my first.

This.

It might be tempting to clear one's save but then you think of all the discoveries that will no longer be "you" and there's the thought of doing the naval rank grind again too. [where is it]

There is a lot of fun to be had in the early game but there's also a lot of annoyance too.

If you're desperate for that "early game" experience again, why not go out to Colonia, blow your entire bank balance on ships, leave 'em in Colonia and then head back to the bubble with just the ship you're sat in?

This is a really good idea, and I might try this some day myself.

Thought about clearing my only CMDR's save a few weeks ago but decided against it - mainly because of the rank grind (Corvette is one of my favourite ships, wouldn't want to have to go through grinding rank AND credits (770m currently) AND engineering it all over again).

I bought a few smaller ships and it does feel like starting fresh to some extent, especially if you 'move' to a part of the galaxy where you don't have any rep yet.

But soon enough you'll want to try something that would be unreachable without some form of grind first.

IMHO the "New Player experience" is impossible to achieve or relive.

Simply due to knowing everything already, all the mechanics, how they function and how they are connected. Including where and how to make Credits, where to go and how to work the locations.
Can't "Clear Save" the brain and all the in-game experience after all.

All you'd achieve would be a new CMDR Name (if desired) and a veteran ELITE Ranked Pilot that just happens to spawn in LHS3447 in a Sidewinder and a few Credits and a deceiving "Harmless" Rank.

A bit like a "Bourne Identity", just without the Memory loss ;)

I guess a 2nd Account would be far more suitable and realistic. A true alter ego, empowered and put into the Cockpit by some wealthy, retired veteran.

Never clear save.. then just spend all credits on ships, buy a sidey with the last bit of cash and fire inside the station. Then choose the free sidey option. Its basicly the same but having assets for later use.

Soft reset.
Keep all your assets aside and dont dig into them for a week or two. That will give you a feel if starting out anew is the right thing for you.

I'd be tempted to do what you're doing. Simply bring your old commander out of retirement. Have your own season, call it 'Jeff's Back', or 'Ryan's Return' and just have fun.

As for clearing your save, my rate of progress is so slow that I'd never do that, but either choice would fit with the JB season. Either way, enjoy and welcome back Jeff!
