If you don't want instant transfer, why not simply avoid using it?

It would DRAMATICALLY increase the amount of people playing the game & the time they play it, due to activities not being essentially "locked off" to people with daily life obligations.

Got to remember that the -average player- probably doesn't have time to do the same trip twice or more just to get the ship they already own to the correct location, especially when travel is already a big time-eater in Elite.

I don't know why you would want to remove this option for those who need it, unless you;

A) are incapable of empathy
B) are incapable of compromise
C) willingly avoiding either out of fear of some kind of advantage from players who obviously play less than you do

I think ship transfers are a good idea.

But I think a delay is needed to retain immersion.

The question is - how long a delay. And - almost as important - a satisfactory in game explanation.

I'd actually like to see several systems implemented.

First - a Ship Hire system so I can rent a ship that I need.
Second - a normal Ship transit system, which is reasonably priced but requires a significant percentage of the normal travel time, although it could still be shorter. Say, a minimum of 1-3 hours with so much extra delay per jump.
Third - an express option. The "Get your ship in ten minutes anywhere" option. I'd suggest simply bringing back the Galactic Hyperdrive as a VERY expensive oneuse item used by ferry companies and one which requires exact navigation data and autonomous control to get around the life destroying radiation. The ferry company will install the drive install the piloting AI and simply let it go. You'll pay, but you'll get your ship in 5 or 10 or 15 minutes.

Lave Radio now, Sandy Sammarco re-ship transfers justifying instant transfer, it the "simple solution". He`s got that much right, definitely catering for the "I want it now" crowd.
The run to Jacques won't be too expensive, clueless decision.

That's very sad news

+1 to this, i consider myself lucky to have a job that allow me to play severals hours of Elite a day, but i can't imagine how the common folk with like 1h of game session a day feels like...

You make me sad Limoncello Lizard, because what you say is true. I want to engage with the world of Elite because it is fantastic, if a little rough in some spots. I just have to spend so much time getting to the engaging bits.

I think some of the people who want "realism" forget that one of the reasons we are playing a game in the first place is to releave boredom, not to experience it. I don't want to add boredom to a game mechanic.
Maybe if I was on a SWAT team, or a      star, I might like a nice relaxing game of Elite:Waiting.

Very frustrated, I can tell you. How I long to dump a whole Saturday into Elite, but no luck :(

Yup, the thing is, the waiting isn't even the relaxing part. Supercruising to a pristine ring isn't relaxing. Mining is. The supercruise can be anxiety inducing because I'm waiting for that pirate to show up after my limpets, or I know I'm just burning precious play-time waiting to arrive at my destination. I don't want to remove supercruise either, I want the mechanics of how it works to be engaging. I don't see a delay on ship transfer as being engaging, if they can do so in the future, then they are more than welcome to implement a delay. But to have it for 'mah immersion' is just not a good enough reason, particularly when you can just wait it out yourself anyway if you want it so bad.

Nope, it is escapism. No boredom in my life, no time for it.

I don't get to play ED a lot but when I do I relish the realism. I mentally block out the space brakes and other such things. Teleportation has just taken the immense ED universe that I have been dreaming of exploring and turned it in to a fairground. Full of flashy lights, loud noises and candy floss.

No more escapism, just another space shooter that will die when the next space shooter comes along.

Because calling a ship you own to a location you travelled to totally negates the travel to get there?

This disappoints me greatly and also confuses me. Braben was only going on the other day, saying how its great the game is rooted in realism etc etc ...what utter BALONEY!

I'm not sure if DB is just a figurehead or he's under pressure from 'suits' but this AGAIN all stinks to me of dumbing the game down, lowest common denominator syndrome. Changing ED step by step towards the mass casual market and taking a huge dump on traditional Elite fans along the way.

also, have you guys noticed the pattern here in the forums? When the kiddies whine they get their way (10% module cost , insurance/loan total, NPCs made dumber etc etc)
and yet when other people complain, it is simply ignored.

I am a kickstarter person and I have a lifetime pass, but if the lifetime pass was in a physical form, I'd rip it up right now. The game is going to the dogs.
I'm sorry but 'instant' ship transfer is beyond a joke and will ruin the game, but wait. it's cool man, more kiddies can jump in, ohh then next they'll totally scrap insurance and after that you'll get 'fast travel' to any sector..)

Good game we had here, I'm out.

I think it should be 1 minute per ly. Or whatever is long enough that lobstris rage posts about how long it is taking to move ships on the forum. Whichever is longer. Because any amount of time is going to be quicker than the current do it yourself and instant is .

1 minute per LY would be INSANE! transferring just 120LY would take two hours. I would be on board for like 10 seconds per LY, or maybe even 5.

*Edit: I mean 5-10 seconds per jump, not LY lol

I know this won't be popular opinion, but ED already takes too long for so many things. I vote no.

No problem with having a personal preference. Keep in mind though that even being able to have your ships delivered to shipyards at all would decrease the amount of time needed to get them there from the current game mechanics.

There's no reason you have to be on-line while they're being delivered either or can't still be enjoying playing the game doing something else.

You might already be aware of this; I'm just helping to clarify for those who might not be.

Sorry. You called? TBH I've given up. They're going to do it. Time to shrug shoulders and move on. Save strength for the upcoming argument on cost sometime around mid-October. :)

Honestly, this amount of hyperbole over a simple game mechanic that will alleviate timesink is almost laughable.

Yes, clearly Fdev has made up their minds on this issue. All that's left for me is trying to redefine my own role within the context of the game. Up till now I've been a white knight clad in sparkly golden armor both in and out of the game...but I feel the dark side whispering to me from the shadows. "When Insta Travel comes online, just grab your 50LY Anaconda and come to Jaques, Jarred Dumas...you know you want to...and when you get here, summon your G5 modded FdL and. Just. Start. Killing. Everyone. In. Sight."

I'll try to ignore those voices...but I don't know if I have the strength anymore. With Insta Transport and no doubt Insta Teleportation with multi-crew, I'm not sure what's going to be left. Hahahahah...

... So, simple and direct... Which would you prefer? ....

I'd actually prefer tiered options, like what you have with parcel deliveries in real life now. I don't think any delivery should be instant but it makes sense if you have the option to pay a premium to get your ship delivered promptly.

This is a real life example:

Service Courier PostExpress PostParcel Post
SpeedSame dayNext business day2+ days

The ED equivalent might be:

Service PremiumRegularCheap
Speed5 min1 hour1 day

(headings might be the same as the synthesis options for consistency.. I couldn't remember what they were, though [smile])

You would still pay based on what ship it is and the distance traveled but extra for premium delivery.

POST MARKER..

When are people going wise up and realise that FD don't <care> about gameplay:

a) DB has gone into some kind of regressive school mode
b) Sandro looks bored and turns up in a cowboy hat

Get real - game is close to dead.

Exactly!!!!! Thank you Commander WR3ND!!!

Guys, keep this thread alive and vote the hell out of it please!!!!!!!!

WE NEED AS MANY PROOFS/OPINIONS (OF THIS INSTANTANEOUS FEATURE IS GOING TO BE A TOTAL MESS) AS POSSIBLE!!! FRONTIER NEEDS TO SEE OUR MAJOR CONCERNS AND THE VOICE OF THE COMMUNITY!!! IT'S GONNA BE FAR FROM "AWESOME", AS MR. SANDRO CLAIMS. LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN GUYS!!! PLEASE!!

...we, ourselves are our last chance for our beloved game not get ruined with such a sloppy feature!!!

TIL that gameplay involves waiting for a ship to be transported.

This thread is a complete farce.

Frontier have made an awesome feature as far as I am concerned. This game has too many time sinks as it is, when I have very limited play time each week. If you don't like such feature, then don't use it. You can get your immersion from having to transport your ships manually. Doesn't mean other players don't welcome the change. I see a lot of people whining that this is dumbing down the game to appease to kids, well some of you with your tantrums are no better than these so called 'kids'.
