Should the Corvette get a better jump range?

The Federal Corvette might be the most maneuverable of the biggest 3 combat ships in the game, it also has the most firepower with 2 huge cannons, but it can't even make a 15 light year jump when it's suited out for combat, not that Core Dynamics has ever been known for their Frame Shift Drives which is understandable for their smaller ships are more for local use. The Corvette however is a star cruiser, meant to help control the systems around the empire and is EVEN meant for long range patrols. It does not make sense then, for this ship to have such a low jump range, it's useless to have 2 huge hard points if you can't even get to the battlefield on time.

I don't think 'long range patrol cruiser' is what people imagine it to be. What you want is not the long jump, but ability to maintain the crew for long periods of time. Even though we don't have any crews and their needs modeled, that's the idea behind long range patrol cruisers...in my mind :D

Exactly. I interpreted 'long range' as referring to loiter time and the abilty to operate far from a base without support, not 'can jump 175 light years'.

But of course everyone will complain about balance.

Amazing isn't it, how people don't want do-everything lolships. The crazy fools.

It makes sense to me that you can get smaller fighters quickly into a battle arena but the big bruisers take longer to deploy.

Small fighters with decent jump range??? Apparently that does not happen in Elite because of weird hand wavy reasons and absurd design decisions.

Viper? Carp jump range
Vulture? Crapier jump range
FDL? Super crapy jump range
Corvette? another fighter type ship with god awful jump range

Makes me wonder how the empire and the federation ever managed to get enough ships in one place to have a war with such awful jump ranges.
Maybe they just had all their battles in Shinrarta Dezhra or maybe they only used Asps and Anacondas to wage war????

Yeah, god forbid that my Corvette jump more than 10 LY. Clearly adding a 3 or 4 more LY to its awful jump range would make it a top of the line deep space exploration ship, am I right?

I know, right? That happens to be why we never had naval warfare until the invention of the steamship. Can you imagine Spain and England trying to get enough ships in one place to have a war with such awful jump ranges?

Yes it should. But, so should the FDL. Actually, if every ship just did a X 2.5 to their current jump range, I would be good with that. Yes, the Conda would be able to do about 100LY as an explorer. But, so what. You could actually go somewhere in the game and do what you want. Not spend all your time jumping.

All ships have trade offs. Corvette has a FDL jump range. Most combat ships have poor jump range. I'd imagine that's to allow non combat ships a chance to high wake.

Cutter has poor pitch and must use a turret combination of some sort to do sustainable damage (not to mention a c7 distibuter). But it has better jump range and good shields. Oh, and PA's on the cutter are not like PA's on the two other ships.

Conda is great all around but will have trouble out dpsing a corvette and won't outlast a cutter.

It's not as much of a balancing issue as much as an overall strength and weakness and the requirements priority each pilot must apply to their ship choice.

Your corvette is already capable of better jump range. Ditch some of the hull reinforcement packages and other bling. Make some compromises.

Why do people want every ship to be the "bestest"? There are tradeoffs, if you want to explore, don't get a Corvette.

What's next? a two-button Elite Gamepad with Button A "Instant win" and Button B "Instant Travel"?

Ridiculous hyperbole and straw man.

I guess you learn something new everyday. I never knew that spanish and english navy ships had FSD drives and could jump, but thanks for sharing that fascinating fact with us.

Balance has nothing to do with it, neither does people wanting to escape. Jump range has nothing to do with how good a ship is in combat, and escaping someone is so easy (jump, drop out of SC, jump) the range is irrelevant.

It's easy to understand why FD don't want a god ship that will do everything, e.g combat ships make poor traders, not great at smuggling etc so the reason for combat ships needing short jump ranges so as not to be god ships I don't buy either.

Maybe short range is designed to direct us to buy more ships because it's such a PITA to move them about? That seems a churlish game design decision to me. it's like making a motorway 1 lane just to 'persuade' drivers to take the bus... oh wait...

Also FD have said they don't want people to just own one ship, that's great and all but would it really stop us buying traders, smugglers, dedicated explorers and the like if say the FDL had a 20ly jump range or the corvette 25? I don't think so.

Another reason could be, that often increasing travel time is a useful tool for making the game environment seem larger than it is. well ED doesn't have that problem, so I don't buy that either

The real answer is, Frontier have decided that's the way it is and that's the way it will always be. It joins gender specific ranks as one of the inexplicably fixed 'we wont change' things

thats too much of an increase, but giving every ship an extra 5 LY jump range would actually make the non A rated FSD drives useful.
Do I really need to point out that when 4 out of 5 options for your equipment selection are effectively useless then it is poor game design?

Besides the problem is not so much in doing multiple jumps as being forced to take detours. So a 100 LY trip is suddenly a 120LY trip because a lot of stars are 13-15 LY away and your "warship" can only jump 12 LY. You end up needing 3 or 4 extra jumps, some of which end up being for only 5 or 6 ly, and what should have taken 11 jumps is now suddenly 15 jumps. This is not balance, it is just a tedious waste of time. It would be like forcing me to solve a differential equation every time I outfit my ship - it adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay. If my Corvette could jump its full distance and not need to anchor to a star then it would not be such an issue.

It doesnt help people in weaker ships to highwake and run away either. Nothing is stopping you from high waking and by the time that the other person scans your wake signature, if he even has a scanner to begin with, you can be in the process of jumping into another system and he can not follow you when you jump from supercruise.

There really is no good gameplay argument for not allowing an FDL or a Corvette to have the same jump range as the FAS, about 15 LY in combat trim.

Yes, both the Cutter and the Corvette need to AT LEAST match the Conda in jump range.
The Cutter also needs a capacitor to match the Corvette and the Conda in Firepower
The Cutter needs to turn at least NOT SLOWER than a T9

I don't know what made Frontier decide that the more expensive ships behind a massive wall of rank grinding should be worse than the cheaper ones available to everybody.

Edit: before someone says the classic: blah blah, but its a good trader:
-It is supposed to be a Warship, not a trader.
-It is gonna be outclassed as a trader than a probably cheaper (and certainly non rank locked) Panther Clipper, and effectively made completely obsolete at every role other than posing for screenshots.

Look at my signature, I am a Corvette pilot ;-).

Point remains: If you want a faster ship, choose another one. There are plenty in game.

Ridiculous is only the fact that someon chooses a ship of his liking and demands that FD modify it to be the best in whatever he wants to do. That happens over and over again on the forums. Still, it remains funny.

Ironic, then, that the Cutter and Corvette are the best trade ships in the game. The Cutter isn't even a good combat ship, but rocks at trade. Weird, considering it's the top tier "war ship".

and that is another abomination that has been forced on us. The Corvette should not be able to equip so many cargo bays. It should be limited in what can be equipped in certain slots, similar to the Orca.
