Sidewinder > Eagle?

Aleks , no FA OFF in that maneouvre?

180´s can be easily done in FA OFF obviously, but that cobra seem to turn at an unusually high rate indeed while quite far from sweet spot at that.

I am not using FA OFF. The first half of the maneuver is slower as it is performed starting with the maximum speed, at 90 degrees speed decreases and becomes closer to maneuvering sweet spot, hence faster turning rate during the second half of the maneuver.

Well, there are different tactics for combat. Of course if you try to outmaneuver Sidewinder at low speed - Cobra is doomed as it is not as maneuverable as Sidewinder. But Cobra is much faster and have more powerful weapons (2C4 and 2C2) you need to take advantage of this. Cobra can fly away from Sidewinder and return, use lateral and vertical thrusters, reverse - this allows to face Sidewinder head on.

Using vertical thrusters I perform 180 degree turn on Cobra as fast as NPC Federal Fighter.

Providing you get in close to the Cobra (in your sidewinder) I find that the Cobra is doomed. Even if it puts on a burst of speed or tries a 180 with FA off etc, its already too late for it. Makes me worry about using a Cobra against player pilots. I don't think i'd survive! Although NPC's give you an easier time (thankfully!)

Have you engaged Cobra PCs in the game? Or your post is based solely on your experience with NPC Cobras? There is no challenge at all in fighting NPC Cobras now. Cobra AI is too primitive in comparison to other NPC ship AI now.

You won't be able to get really close to a Cobra piloted by a skilled PC.

I think in the video your absolute velocity is shown as maxed out all the time, and never at the sweet spot no? I can see your throttle goes down to zero and/or reverse quite fast after starting the turn but the velocity remains maxed out.

Actually, when I am at 90 degrees the speed drops exactly to the maneuverability sweet spot. It is difficult to record a video looking at speed gauge as in this case it is hard to perform the maneuver as clean and fast as it is required. The maneuver requires applying thrust at the right time, however it is easy to lose this focus looking at the speed gauge.

Yeah, you are probably right. Haven't found a player Cobra for a while to find out but I remember when I was flying a Cobra back in Alpha 4 I was easily dispatched by players and NPCs alike! I have improved since then but not yet able to see if I can handle the Cobra better. What's the go-to tactic for getting guns on an Eagle whilst flying a Cobra then?
FA off-sweet spot speed-180?
Vertical thrusters with maximum pitch?
This might be the wrong thread to discuss that :)

Each fight with another player is unique so there cannot be special tactics to deal with Eagle. A lot depends on the actions of the other pilot and from the initial conditions. Generally try to point your ship towards the enemy so that you would be able to hit it, while trying to stay out of the enemy fire.

putting 3 beam lasers on an Eagle is a bad idea. I've won every fight against an Eagle easily with this config...in fact I've won every fight against and Eagle regardless of weapon loadout....so far.

Agreed on the three laser setup. I'm thinking the optimum setup, bar expensive missiles, is going to be one laser and two multicannons. I tried an all ungimbled multicannon affair but its just too hard to aim in a dog fight, but it was amazing fun like I have never had with umgimbled weapons before.

I've yet to lose against a sidewinder in an Eagle but good pilots are so hard to find ;)

Anyone tried multicannons only and going all out stealth on the Eagle? Seems like the perfect ship for it.

It is a great ship. However, as I used Eagle only for test purposes during A4 only I might admit that using multi-cannons on Eagle required replenishing ammunition quite often.

I'm looking forward to kitting into an Eagle today and making the decision myself. For now I find the sidewinder to be perfectly capable with 2 pulse lasers

I fly the vulture. I must say this.

The sidewinder takes a beating and is decently agile.

The eagle gives me problems trying to get a lock on but its weak as heck. Needs good shields.

The Eagle is a great little ship, The loadouts I found most effective;

1 Gimballed Multi-Cannon (Top)
2 Fixed Pulse Lasers

or

1 Fixed Beam Laser (Top)
2 Gimballed Multicannon

Also you should play around with weight a bit, dont bother with armor etc, to increase speed an maneuverability which is where this ship shines.
