Newcomer / Intro Sidewinder in Combat: Training Mission

Regarding the Jump Range. Pity they don't say "LY per fuel load" It could be "LY per anything". Units are so important. eg. "Oh, my speed was around 150." 150 what!!! m/sec? mph? LY/min? ...... 😉

No they are not wrong it is not per fuel load it is per ship mass - fuel load is just one variable, cargo and equipment fit can (and is) varied to determine jump capability - so ly/fuel load is inadequate. Your jump range is displayed with three conditions in outfitting - minimum (when you are at max load) - current (with the load as per now) - maximum (with no cargo and minimal fuel). They could show what your jump per "ship mass" was but then the salt from people trying to work out what their ship mass was at different cargo and fuel loads would be incredible. So the current what your ship will do / can do seems OK to me.

Thanks for the correction. However, I think my double error shows even more how important it is to show the units, irrespective of any confusion that it might generate. The current units are shown as LY. Which is correct (as you say), but it's incomplete. I'm not suggesting the figures be changed, but just to say what Mass conditions were in place to arrive at these figures. However, I do agree the figures are useful when making range comparisons when including/excluding various cargo and fuel loads. I'll make it a point to explore further how I would include the units (maybe conditions might be a better term in this), keeping in mind what you have said above. Now is just not the time.

I'm starting to feel a little more confident as I climb on board, strap myself in, and seek approval to launch. I know ... I know .... "I know nothing!" 😉 but I am acquiring the very basics and things aren't quite as daunting as they were a few weeks ago. There have been times when I would avoid loading ED, just because things were so hard to follow. I couldn't even get out of my storage bay! Instead, I would come to the forum just to seek assurances that it will get easier. I feel as though I have acquired some of that necessary confidence and I'm looking forward to the next tutorial challenge.
ED is "getting me in" ........ and hence my eagerness to start the Mapping Tutorial.
And why am I in this state of euphoria? Because of all the help I am receiving here. THANK YOU. 👍

Just keep chipping away at it. The initial learning curve is more like a cliff in this game. It takes time to acquire the basics, because there's a ton of them!

You seem to be on the right track though. Just take one thing at a time, or attempt to do so. It's hard to just learn one thing in ED, because each bit of knowledge seems to require 10 other bits before it makes sense.

Fortunately, the human mind is mighty flexible. Every time I watch someone playing clarinet or saxophone it strikes me again how great people are at learning. The fingering on those instruments is crazy.

So if you keep at it, you will, over time, start to get your bearings. The underlying logic will become clearer. You'll start to enjoy just flying the ship.

And that, my friend, is really what this game is about. Flying spaceships. Everything in the game is just there to give you a reason to fly somewhere, really.

I guess with the next expansion, Odyssey, they'll be adding the ability to walk around as well. I hear you'll even be able to play the game without ever owning a spaceship! I suppose some people will do that. Not me. Sure, I'll walk around when it's available, but I've played this game all these years because I love flying. Thousands of hours and I still enjoy it.

I'm gonna be 70 this coming year. So I guess I'm still 10 years behind ya. But you're never too old to learn something new!

Me to. No wish to walk around. Maybe, yes, drive around, but it's all about flying and exploring for me. Tomorrow is full moon here in Bali. Hopefully not too many clouds. And it will be up there! The real thing! And we've been there! Incredible! That's why ED is so good: it allows each of us to get out there amongst the Stars ...... and how good is that! 👍

70? Just a boy! But seriously. You have an ageless imagination ...... you have to have or you wouldn't be here ....... like me ........ and how lucky is that! 😉

it would seem that more and more of us seniors are playing ED. Wonder if it's due to the shut down or we can finally put our previous labor's of love behind us and start acting like kids again.

In all seriousness. There must be something about ED that attracts the senior player like you and I. I find that very encouraging. The game has to have some depth, body, guts, meaning, plausibility to it, otherwise, I for one, wouldn't be here. 😎

I've been playing since I retired in 2016. So yeah, I guess it fits. Although I can't say I ever had a 'labor of love' previously. It was just a job :)

I was a "Tradee" to start with and hated it. Finished up teaching and whatever, and loved it. I was lucky: mature aged students
