Community Event / Creation Sidewinder, the brick version

Just amazing! I was amazed at how much detail and the way you got around with the pieces to make them stay at the right angle with the flat shapes.
Amazing, very well done indeed! :)

Guys! Thanks for all the feedback!
I'll try to find and upload the LDD project files and the higher res images soon.
The problem is, since I got the beta access I've spent more time flying around in space than playing with LDD, but I'll definitely try and create some more E:D brick stuff in the future :)

Hey man, did you ever upload that LDD file? I'm good with bricklink and want to recreate your masterpieces.

Thanks

Hey, i made the mini Cobra with some variations based on your image: http://imgur.com/a/BcXpA
Don't have your cool decals but the shape is pretty close haha

My final brick count was kinda high, 32.
Any chance you share your LXF file?

Yup, ex-Cuusoo. They don't accept anything remotely battle- or war-related. Some amazing LEGO Mass Effect concepts died because of that.

Yeah, except for all the kits that ARE battle/war related; see: Pirate and Medieval kits, Police related kits and even space kits that come with guns... so don't mind me while I question whether or not you know what you're even talking about.

These are brilliant - the Sidewinder looks downright venomous little fighter!

I find this rather hilarious, considering they have a rather expen... extensive Star Wars range...

If I was the lego people, I'd let people order straight from the design program.

that feature has been removed from the lego digital designer a year or two ago. Reasons cited included too much human effort required to compile the custom sets and as a result their price going through the roof. You could even design your own box art in the old days.

I saw on another thread re: Elite and Lego that someone said it should never happen as next thing you know, Disney would buy E:D and we'd end up with Mickey Jameson (CMDR Mouse, surely?)

Oh well, too late anyway:

I have only one question. Where can I buy the sidewinder? ;)

That is a good question. Sadly it would be quite difficult - the parts alone for mine took 11 Bricklink orders and came to around $200USD/£130GBP - though I did use a lot of expensive colours because I'm obviously a masochist.

For someone to do it for you would likely be prohibitively expensive due to the time involved, and it takes sometimes weeks for all the orders to arrive from around the world.

To do it yourself, the basic process is this:
Download Lego Digital Designer (LDD)
Open .LXF file
Recolour all the pieces to the design you want and save
Convert the .LXF file to a Bricklink wanted list file (LDD Manager is a little Win application that can do this)
Upload the wanted list to Bricklink
Check for illegal piece/colour combinations - change design in LDD where necessary, save, convert, upload, check again. Repeat and rinse.
Check for prohibitively expensive / rare pieces - change design as above, etc, repeat and rinse.
Start working out the cheapest way to order the parts from the fewest stores, preferably in a country close to you (US tends to be cheapest but takes a long time to deliver to the UK, and large orders risk getting caught up at customs)
- There are tools in Bricklink that can help
- There is also an application that works it out for you, but it only works for simple orders
Place orders, pay for each one, and wait.
Receive each order and laboriously check it is complete
Contact sellers who missed pieces to arrange resending/refunds. If refunds source the missing pieces somehow - this doesn't happen too much thankfully. Most sellers are very conscientious.
Start building
Realise you have messed up somehow, and need to order pieces you forgot to order or managed to get wrong somehow
Wait for new orders
Recommence building
Suffer crippling self-doubt over lack of social or sex life
Complete build
Eventually get round to photographing it, possibly inveigling a friend who is better at it than you
If doing it yourself, hate the pictures, start researching lighting and backdrop setups, get carried away with DSLRs and lenses... (I skipped this step, as you can tell)

Months later emerge bleary eyed wondering why you ever started.

Congratulations, you are an AFOL*.

Like I said, I'm obviously a masochist.

On another note, the OP was worried about how well it held together - mine is very solid, and as we say in the AFOL world, has great 'swooshability' - bar being quite heavy for small hands perhaps.
The interior might acually be a bit over-engineerd, but that's cheap basic bricks, so I have no problem with it.

Yep, the Lego X-Wings are quite popular indeed. What they do have a problem with is copyrighted designs, so things like this might be a problem if they don't have official licencing from Frontier. Which is kind of understandable - I'm sure Frontier would want some sort of cut from any sales of such a set.
