<sigh> Should I ditch my PS4 for PC?

I'll just say YES. VR is only dependent on the PC/Laptop if it's not really ready for it- it's more about your bandwidth.
I am running a HP OMEN 17t laptop and I use the Oculus Go when I have access to high bandwidth.
ED is no problem for this one.

Hay War Eagle. Can you produce a video on Oculus Go? I tried it because of my Brother has one. I just like to see how it reacts to Elite Dangerous.

As someone who has both, as good as it looks in VR on PC there are times when being to play in front of a big 4K TV are very very much preferable.
There is no reason you can't do that with a PC. Just connect it to your TV. You could even use in house streaming.

Switched from pc to ps4, transferred all my wealth, sold the pc. After one year I bought a pc just for Ed Vr. Started a new account. I only use the pc for Ed Vr and the occasional beat saber. 99% it's Ed Vr. I bought the og rift then sold it recently and bought the rift s. It's a lot of money to spend just to play elite in Vr. After a year of playing in Vr I've come to the conclusion that it's totally worth it.

PS still play on the ps4 from time to time

Even better is when first person shooter noob devs tie the rate of fire to frames per second so players with beefy setups have a much faster rate of fire than someone running on a potatoe... not the case with ED but an interesting peice of trivia.

A lot less of the game is tied to framerate than it used to be but as with most time critical gameplay, framerate is still king.

But the BGS interaction between players is (imo) fantastic and crosses both modes and platforms. For me, that's where the important player interactions happen that keep me playing and I can do that on any compatible equipment.

I know, but on the PC I have a full Warthog HOTAS and moving that to the TV is a pain, so I have a PS4 account for just bumbling around the galaxy as a relaxer

I would probably just buy a cheap laptop or tablet, connect it to the TV, get a gamepad, install steam on it and use steam in home streaming from a more powerful machine in another room. Certainly cheaper than a PS4, you can use the same accounts and you only need to buy each game once. Obvious downside is no RDR.

Before you give up, there's a thrustmaster hotas that works for ps4 you might want to try. Im not too happy with quality of the throttle but it gets the job done and has the same effect.

The pc has the tools which are nice for cutting and pasting search results.. this alone might make the difference for you..

But id probably be inclined to say its surprisingly flat transition.. the graphics are pretty much identical on both platforms save any frame rate issues.
Graphics are noticeably better on a good PC. There is also the VR aspect too.

But I am sure the PS5 will have enough grunt to equalise the graphics and provide a good VR experience.

I expect Fdev to release ED on the PS5 with VR support.

The general answer would be: moving to PC once you've already started (as you have) is only worth if you can run a top-tier VR experience. Your laptop most likely cannot.

Having said this, Frontier's treatment of the PS4 version of the game has so far been fairly abysmal, with a barely-optimized port that is far below what could be achieved even with a relatively underpowered console, and persistent platform-specific bugs.

So if you want to play Elite with only the "universal" bugs and no PS4-specific ones, yeah, consider PC.

How? There's only framerate, the new god ray effects in asteroid rings, possibly other minor things we can't spot. The great majority is identical.

Yeah i hope they go for psvr.. have one of those and couldn't get it running well enough on pc... apart from the motion sickness would be neat to have.

Textures are not as good and detailed, the LOD isn't as good. When I see it on my brother's PS4 it looks like it's on medium settings. The PS4 pro though is probably better. I haven't seen that.

It will be the same with games such as RDR2 if it comes out for PC, expect it to be better. Better textures, better lighting etc, if you have the PC to run it like that.

I've been playing Elite for about a year on PS4. I've accumulated ranks, permits, Engineering, an Anaconda, Corvette, (other ships are available), paint jobs, and Exploration Codex data.

Yet somehow I'm made to hate my console. There are more third party tools for the pc (http://edcodex.info/?m=tools) and I would be able to use a VR headset, HOTAS, voice control etc.

Is the grass really greener on the other side?

Would FDev help me migrate to PC?

PS. I don't yet have a gaming PC, just a laptop and monitor for work. So that would need to be a factored in.

With the danger of sounding like some elitist tool, the PC is really superior for games with simulation aspects. Not that Elite is "Flight Simulator", but it is a game with a fairly complex control scheme and where a lot of third-party tools (hardware and software) can greatly enhance gaming experience and immersion.

Yeah fair enough. I can't see a difference between ps4 pro on quality and pc ultra.. havent done a scientific analysis, just when asking the question how was the ps4 version the conclusion was "exactly the same". Not sure if frontier has done anything specific for it, though i think they acknowledge its existence in a support faq, which is the only "speaks volumes" we're going to get.

Hey thanks for you replies everyone. It's given me a lot of things to think about.
I going to come down on the "get the PC" argument, and I think that in the end this might be the best way to go.
Yes there are more cheaters on the PC (I've not seen many), but I'm against consoles in general due to them locking down the games you can buy for them.
If it worked so that you bought a game then decided which platform you'd like to use, that would be fairer.
I bow otherwise to the comments laid down here by others, both for and against.
