Simple Question About Future DLCs

Now that EDO has been out for a while:
  • Would you consider paying for an advance purchase for the next major DLC for ED?
  • Would you consider paying for advance access as an "alpha tester"?
  • Would you consider paying to upgrade with the next major DLC upon release? How long would you wait?
  • Would you be predicting a higher level of quality & completion upon release? Or the same.

I love this game and would like to see new content flowing, so yes, I would pre-order new DLC. I don't need alpha testing or any extra fluff though.

That said, I continue to be concerned about older features receiving updates or at the very least bug fixes, for example Powerplay not receiving any updates. New DLC does not necessarily mean these would get dev time.

I see a problem with letting us alpha test. Seeing that Frontier keeps everything about a new release very secretive, there is no way that new gameplay and features wouldn't leak from alpha testers..
For ED its not really alpha testing in the classic sense. Its actually just early access to an incomplete game with no pressure to actually test anything or submit reports etc.

I have already paid for the DLC and every DLC for this game...... I do not plan on paying any more unless i feel they go above and beyond in a release, then i will buy some ARX.

IF I hadnt then................... chances are I would be

Yes
No
Yes (if 1) wasnt an option)
Same

AS much as i am not really that impressed with the direction of the game ................ its still elite at the end of the day, so long as they dont stop me playing in VR i will keep playing. Given the long standing bugs in the game i do not expect any future content to be any different

  • I've already paid in advance
  • No - feedback is generally ignored
  • see 1
  • same as now.

Now that EDO has been out for a while:
  • Would you consider paying for an advance purchase for the next major DLC for ED?

I already did, seeing as I have the Lifetime Expansion Pass from my original Alpha access. I would only be willing to pay in advance for my alt if Frontier finally demonstrated they understood what a player-testing environment should be used for: testing future patches and DLC out in the "wild" of players computers, to ensure that the game breaking bugs are found and fixed before its released. What player-testing environments should not be used for is a marketable sneak peek.

  • Would you consider paying for advance access as an "alpha tester"?

As an LEP holder, I already have. As I wrote above, this whole notion of paying extra to be an "alpha tester" should be taken out to the shed and shot. Its really to Frontier's advantage to open up testing to the wider player base IMO. The carefully curated quality-assurance computers is not indicative of the chaotic ecosystem of computers programs encounter in the real world. I got lucky because I had a very similar computer to David Braben's computer at home, which he was using to "test" Odyssey to see how it performed on older computers. It would be a very poor IT department which didn't duplicate their CEO's personal computer to test their products on.

  • Would you consider paying to upgrade with the next major DLC upon release? How long would you wait?

Again, as an LEP holder, I don't need to worry about how long I'd be willing to wait. For my alt, though? It would depend upon what the update contains, and whether Frontier finally learned its lesson from Odyssey's release. Though I didn't wait too long to buy Odyssey for my alt, so. take what I wrote with a grain of salt.

  • Would you be predicting a higher level of quality & completion upon release? Or the same.

Given the fact that Cyber Punk 2077's disaster of a release failed to teach Frontier a valuable lesson, I really don't see Frontier changing their deeply ingrained corporate culture anytime soon. One can hope that Odyssey's disaster of a release might finally be the catalyst for change, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Yes
  • Would you consider paying for advance access as an "alpha tester"?
Just like with EDO? Yes
  • Would you consider paying to upgrade with the next major DLC upon release? How long would you wait?
As I paid for the advance purchase...
  • Would you be predicting a higher level of quality & completion upon release?
Than what? EDO? I wouldn't predict it, but would hope it was!
  • Or the same.
It couldn't have been any worse - well, it could, but not by much.

@Darkfyre99 on an unrelated note to a fellow backer, in 2013 the forum was altered to reflect the success of the kickstarter and marks the year that many of us joined up. (not the old fogeys like TJ who were already here).
It's your 10 year forum anniversary today, happy forum day 🍰 :D
Thank you! How time flies!

ooo i just checked.. i was a little later. i used to follow the elite site very closely (I think it was called elite club? - it had a very blue background iirc) but truth be told after waiting and waiting i lost the faith and gave up on elite IV ever coming out. (I played a lot of oolite ) i still rememeber my 1st post on this site (or the early version of this site). i think it was TJ who was 1st to reply to it

Depends on the contents of the DLC. I think.

New ships / ship interiors / new mission types / etc I would maybe consider trying out early and would expect quality to generally be okay.

I’d be very nervous about major game / engine changes - eg: base building, landing on fully populated atmospheric worlds like Earth where huge cities would be present, etc … as the engine already seems stretched with what is in Odyssey.

YES
NO, not really interested in alpha/early access
YES
Same, but "hopefully" better than that...

All that said, I HAVE been playing Odyssey since day 1 or 2 without looking back, having purchased it the day prior to release, after having purchased & played Horizons daily for about 9 months prior to Ody.

No- because no game could convince me to do this.

No- I already do something similar as an actual job. All I'd do with alpha software in my free time is mess around and not be helpful.

No- I'd wait for the first reviews to come in before making a decision.

Same- as with every update ever.
