Skybox Nerfed?

Would it not be better to save it as a high-rez bitmap? Huge file size, but we are talking about subtle shades of dark grey. In daylight you likely would not notice them. It looks like an over-processed image or YouTube video.

I have not noticed it today (daylight still), but remember noticing it last night. It may have been a passing thing as I either ignored it after that or it went away.

Nothing has been nerfed on a visual side, we've never removed an option or degraded something on purpose. We do optimise things and shuffle settings but nothing should stop things looking lovely. Screenshots are going to help on this one though! We did add a hires close up dust layer to mimic local dust before release, this shouldn't be blurry or fuzzy though and should add to the general cohesive feel of the galaxy.

Asteroids still look pants up close in med/high/ultra material quality though.

dude, that's wear and tear to your canopy.

Checked the screenshots and mine doesn't look like that.

I would provide a screenshot, but I'm at work. Looks like an isolated issue.

Have a play with some of the settings, and log a ticket.

*edit* downloaded the latest one... are you sure that's not just wear and tear?

ah I see.

Yeah its space dust init.

looks ok to me

did you check your gamma levels and monitor settings? If to high it will cause the issue you're describing

So on the last shot I uploaded, the dark area in the middle is the main 'issue'.

Now looking at it again.... in fact I think the issue is the 'new' added dust.... in fact yes... I'm pretty sure thats what it is, the dust overlay need to either go away or blend more smoothly

From V1.0.0 patch notes

"Sky box view distance altered to reduce memory usage in highly populated regions"

That only effects the galactic core afaik. Where it used to kill FPS (badly).

Those black splodges you see in the distance are dust clouds and nebula, you can reach them.

Hi Matt, I think I've got to the bottom of it... the 'close up' dust layer seems to be fixed in place, like it's attached to the skybox. I think it would work if it were particle based, but as it is fixed in one place, no matter how fast/slow or what direction you go it's stuck, therefore actually does the opposite of the intended effect?

Could I be so bold as to ask for a on off option in a future build?

So I've jumped into my super Cobra and had a look in that system, it looks like right in that view there's a patch of darker dust. It's part of the background so it doesn't move, if your running a high gamma or contrast this will be more obvious to you. The way we create this may change at some point as it's not as good as we want it to be but better than without it. Turning off the dust means space looks too clean. So basically yes there's something there, yes its not perfect, yes it's on our to do list for the future. I'm afraid there's not a lot I can do about it right now though :( as long as your in top graphics mode it'll look as good as it can right now, at some point we'll hopefully make it even better especially for larger monitors!

Matt ... is there any option to get a higher res galaxy on the skybox for those that can run it? On my 3 screen setup the stretching on the side screens makes it look a little iffy.

Not right now but it's something we're aware of! Generating even higher res backgrounds is a pain as it would effectively sit you in hyperspace for longer (where we build the incoming system), every doubling of resolution quadruples the pixel count (Which is why whenever everyone claims a new card/console is 5 times better etc then it never really is as everyone immediately doubles the resolution on everything which eats 4 our of your 5 multipliers!)

No worries, thanks for taking the time to answer :)

I tried fiddling around with the resolution in the appconfig file, gave me crashes but the background sure looked nicer with 4096 texture resolution :D Changed it back though probably not enough video ram.

I tried that in beta 2 or gamma 1, wasn't sure if it had to be in multiples of 256 or not though.

Hi Matt, is there any plan to make planets go from "white dots" to actual objects from a larger distance? most planets don't pop up until i'm at at 2 LS from them. I know its easier to spot them that way in supercruise where they are far away, but the planet model should be popping up way before im right next to them.
