Hauling stuff from one place to the other isn't exactly new, its a core element of Elite since forever.

Grab a few bottles of brandy and deliver them. Then go and do something interesting for a bit. When you get to a convenient break, go get a few more bottles. Rinse and repeat. It will take you ages to get the upgrade, but it will be ages filled with gameplay instead of hours filled with grind.
