Small ship flight model buff!

I am excited for this but a little confused, do they mean FSD drives or thrusters? When it says drives it makes me think FSD but the way they talk it sounds like thrusters. Either would be really nice though, I love the adder design but dont have a job for it at all. If it is FSD I assume it will to fix the weight ratio that gives bigger FSDs an advantage. I would not be unhappy if smaller ships became the best long range traders and explorers :)

It'd be really cool if small, fast craft became more popular again, instead of being (very) brief stepping stones to larger craft. We could see lots of small craft used as 'blockade runners' in CGs or Powerplay systems..

(Ok.. I know with Solo & PG and instancing issues, you never really have to run any blockades unless you really need to).

I understood it like thrusters.

To be fair, those tiny ships could really use more speed to keep being useful after the first week of play.

Nimble AND fast ships will make for excellent planetary content ships.

Ok time to get my Viper III back, I had a blast in mine and kept it for a long time, but currently the Cobra III kills it in many ways.
Should my Vulture be worried ........... nope ;)

I still see the Cobra III a smuggler par deluxe no mater this buff.

At least until the Keelback, FDS and Anaconda can launch fighters anyway.

Anything to help small ships is welcome! Small ships could really use something for a little replay value, more speed means new smuggling ships to me ;)

Wondering what the drawback(s) of these drives will be...
Higher power draw?
Increased energy consumption?
Higher boost/regular speed but lesser pitch/roll/yaw?
Crazy heat increase for each boost..?

To me it sounds like it's an in-lore justification for a buff, not a purchasable module per se (though I might be wrong)

That could be pretty cool. I was reading it as a new module though, so I was expecting higher power consumption, heat, and more cap draw per boost.

Kind of actually hoping it's a new module, actually, but either way is awesome.

I think it's a part of a vast conspiracy to get me to spend more money on paintjobs. ;)

one of the more exciting consequences is an indirect nerf to the rail meta.

In fact, I fully expect this to mean a very real return to the gimballed meta for medium ships which have for the last few months been living fat with fixed everything as a one-size-fits-all offensive setup. If these small ships perform like we think they can, PvP CMDRs will have to pick fights carefully if running an all-fixed build and it's very easy to imagine a CMDR going through their entire arsenal of rail munitions trying to hit these fruit fly ships to no avail. Hard to hit what you can't see with fixed weaponry. all fixed will still be great for medium vs medium or medium vs large, but going fighting ships a class or two smaller than your (gimbals and turrets will be necessary again) will be markedly different very soon.

This is also going to make ships like the Cutter nearly 100% dependent upon Turrets in an ever-increasing number of scenarios. The ship really has no chance at keeping most small or mid sized ships piloted by reasonably experienced PvP pilots in front of it with these changes making even gimballed weapons only realistic against the slowest of ships (other big ships + Pythons + Gunships). That's cool if FDev's plan is to also revisit the precision/strength of turreted weapons or plan to revisit the pitch speeds of the ship. Otherwise, the Cutter becomes a lame duck beyond trading. A battle ship almost fully dependent on turreted weapons in a balance state where turrets are often inaccurate and underpowered...leaves me wanting.

It is indeed fantastic news. I do wonder, though, whether these drives might only be compatible with Faulcon de Lacy vessels?

I too love the Courier, but we might need to visit an engineer to get that pimped.

Just speculating, of course. :)

Great post, BTW, @Heavenly-Hammer.

Just made me laugh thinking maybe trade cutters will finally fear those Npc Pirate Adders that make such bold claims all the time. About time if you ask me :)
