Smell-O-Vision

I'm a bit of a tinkerer, and I was thinking it would be kinda fun to make my own Smell-O-Vision for ED. Basically it would work by having a small script watching the journal logs, and if the script detects that I'm taking heat damage, it turns on a relay that shunts current through a 20-50 ohm 1/8 watt resistor (5V source) which heats up the resistor beyond its power-handling capacity, resulting in that lovely smell of burning electronics. This would likely result in the destruction of said resistor, but these are tiny components that can be purchased in bulk for cheap, and it's not that often I overheat my ship, so it's a relatively simple and feasible way of creating that acrid, immersive smell to go along with a smoking cockpit.

Whether I actually do this or not, who knows? It won't be right away, and if I do I will likely tie it to a small control panel that lets me flip switches and push buttons rather than press keys on a keyboard (for things like lights, landing gear, etc). Any other tinkerers are welcome to run with my idea in the meantime. If you do it, let me know how it turns out!

You'd have to have a trough full of petrol surrounding your seat set on fire to simulate certain ships.

That's just silly :p

But you have given me an idea!!!

this will work well with my home made washing machine & VR Elite Dangerous rig

I am offended by the amount of lint around the drain, which is clearly representative of the cosmetics store, and by the penny in the drier, representing ARX.

Yeh, very good.
Totally stolen from Cmdr Blastard!😐

this was edited with my fair hands has someone else been stealing my work? an earlier rendition is as so...

im reminded its a game everytime i go to outfitting and dont see small seismic charges there, every-time i look it feels like a small kitten dies somewhere.

that aside, i completely sympathise with you, i mean my living room was completely breaking my immersion but i didn't have many funds to build my own spaceship and actually fly it in space so i've had to improvise....

so my brother of immersion (or sister im not prejudice) you need to get the washing machine into your living room while on spin cycle and sit on it while playing elite dangerous... dude it will seriously blow your mind!

then if you get some little cut outs of elite dangerous images and tape them to your eyelids you can pee on the cat in the corner of your living room and its like you haven't left the cockpit of your ship!!!, its glorious,

PS i think my cats dead because i forgot to feed him, after-all you cant have cats in space and it was breaking my immersion to open the cat food with a tin opener, there was no other option.

I've developed a low-cost, low-effort alternative whereby whenever I overheat, I just light a match and quickly blow it out.

Phase 1 testing has yielded positive results, in that a smell is made, and I can smell it.

I will post more results as they come in.

If using prismatic shields, you could wear some of those old fashioned red-green 3D glasses. You already have the right avatar for it Old Duck.

I'm a bit of a pyromaniac, and I was thinking it would be kinda fun to make my own Void-O-Vision for ED. Basically it would work by having a small script watching the journal logs, and if the script detects that that my canopy has failed, it turns on a relay that shunts current through a 1-3 ohm blasting cap (450V source) which detonates the blasting cap, resulting in the explosion of the C4 I stuffed in my ears. This would likely result in the destruction of my eardrums, but these are tiny components that can be purchased in bulk for cheap from Chinese labor camps/organ farms, and it's not that often my canopy fails, so it's a relatively simple and feasible way of creating that sensation of deafness to go along with a blown canopy.
