So dissapointed with my CV1

I'm a year long DK2 veteran, love elite, love VR.

Got my CV1 after a 6 month pre-order wait. I'm so disappointed. The God Rays or lens flare or whatever are just awful! How could anyone, especially Palmer Lucky, try this and think it was an improvement over DK2????!

Also, you can tell it's 2 separate screens that have been matched (badly) off a production line as in darkness there's a big disparity between the 'full black'.

Apart from the increase in resolution and MARGINAL improvement in SDE, there's not much keeping me from going back to DK2.

Anyone else feel this way with CV1?

On the plus side it's probably still better than us Vive users are getting ;)

Sorry I can't help really but its possible you have a bad unit with regard to the screen difference but it might be worthwhile messing with the resolution settings from within the debug software that Rift allow access to.

Some folk will no doubt chime in to help soon.

Yeah I really feel for the Vive users.

Thing is, all I use VR for, heck, all I use my PC for is Elite Dangerous. It's my escape, my sanctuary. And it's like someone's ruined it.

Meh. Hopefully someone will be able to help soon.

I own a CV1 but never the DK2.

I'm gonna toss out a few things you may already know or do...

Are you using the debug tool?
I assume you read the CV1 sticky up top for a few of the HUD/graphics tweaks?

I agree the god rays are pretty annoying. Are those even fixable?
Is it hardware based or a byproduct of elite?

I really saw a huge improvement from the DK2 to the CV1... EXCEPT for the god Rays...that were annoying me a lot at the beginning and thought the same as you, was even decided to sell the device.

Then , Following the advice from some experienced users, i calmed down and tried to play regularly... but!!.. the first thing i did, was to move up the gamma slider, to wash out the general image, the space is not that dark anymore, but in general is much more comfortable.

Now i can say i don't even care about the god rays... i don't know what happened but doesn't bother me at all at this moment, and i can tell you i was really really upset when i came from the DK2... , the only issue i have now is, even with a 980ti and no oversampling... i have a lot of microstutter and flickering.. seems that is dificult for ED to keep that resolution and frame rate, i will try to optimize my system soon anyways.

And then there is the Debug tool if you want to try it, that makes wonders with the CV1, but i have to say it's really hard to keep a stable frame rate once you go oversampling.

.

OK so with the gamma slider right up it's a lot better. going to persevere. I also thought I would sell my CV1 and revert to DK2. I must admit in Adr1ft it's fabulous so not writing it off just yet.

I have been using the DK2 for the last year but stopped playing ED since oculus official 1.3 release and no longer being able to use sweetfx/reshade (black smearing and light dispersion color became huge issue rendering space really ugly).
Last week a friend of mine lent me a CV1 and played ED and warthunder. Yes there were god rays but I did see major improvement in SDE and being able to see distant objects better. HOWEVER, I also had the same obeservation as you about one eye being different from the other eye when in dark regions of space. The gray shades are disgusting/cartoonish, like it became on the DK2 at the end, but on one eye, so again--- unplayable for me. SO in ED it was 2 steps forward 2 step back. In Warthunder, on the other hand, it was all around fantastic (probably due to being a brighter game).

not full right, but around 3/4 i think is good enough

War thunder (simulation mode) and a pixel density of 1.25 in the debug tool is awesome.

Changing the HUD colours to one based on a pale blue or green definitely helps with the god rays as they affect the text and the straight lines of the HUD more than anything else, but I guess as a DK2 user you've probably done that already. After a week I'm finding the glare not bothering me too much apart from the occasional sense that a small amount of vaseline has been smeared on the inside of the lenses. Honestly the low resolution bothers me much more than the glare.

Also, you can tell it's 2 separate screens that have been matched (badly) off a production line as in darkness there's a big disparity between the 'full black'.

Have you reported this to Oculus support?

No, but I think I might. I'm going to play around with HUD colours and brightness to find a happy place.

In brighter games the CV1 is superb, I'm just amazed they made such a huge compromise, I home there's another HMD in future that uses traditional lenses focused on contrast.

The comfort level after a few hours of playing is quite improved over the DK2.. Having it not press against your face and rest on top of your head instead of your nose is huge. It feels a lot lighter (even if it's not) and my neck says thank you :) Yeah the resolution increase feels marginal, the godrays you start ignoring them quickly unless you have white logos on black backrounds (these are still not looking so good). A good resolution increase is to come (Samsung showed off a high res panel recently) but that will require more horsepower from the PC, one 1080 wont be enough...

i have deepoon e2 and vive, not really bothered by god rays to start with but i think if you give it some time they will become less of an issue.

mostly tho i dont think elite wont be optimal until the next generation of vr with at least 4k pixels per eye just due to the nature of the game.

Hey man.. im with you on the DK2 it was a lot of fun and discovery on the way here :) All those nice lil' community demos etc.. great

Now i have both CV1 and Vive and i just feel so happy to take the DAMN THINGS OFF! whoah reality looks sooo nice! :) grr

I have a Vive. It isn't perfect, but compared to playing on a 24" monitor it is night and day even with the fuzzy text issues (and that's the only issue left for me.)

Don't cry for me Argentina, I mean mikeytrw. I'm playing 2 hours a night with the Vive and having a blast. The issues (with E: D, everything else works flawlessly) will be fixed in time, then I'll be in hog heaven.

I barely understand what people are talking about when they say god rays. I see god rays in loading screens. I do notice that if my headset is not aligned just right I see more god rays. Maybe the dimensions and fit change from dk2 to cv1 are the issue?

If you focus on some flaw then it's all you will see. If you're very picky about image quality then VR will be disappointing.

JUST LOL OP , ok there are a little rays but not that bad. I had my DK2 over 1 year and sold it to a friend . for 2 weeks i was visiting him and he was playing elite. and i took the dk2 on and just had to laugh . I have my CV1 since end april and man when i put that dk2 back on agian its just lol never could go back to that blurry mess.
the picture is like 80% better with CV1 everything is totaly sharp and just looks awesome. DK2 is a blurry pixel mess. The screen door effect is like 5 times better alomost not noticble. And you know that there is a slider for IPD to cause dont know what you taking with 2 screens put togheter lol. Send it back perhaps somthing is wrong with you CV1 if not somethings wrong with your eyes. Guys who preorderd dont belive this troll. and for god rays just adjust gamma and you screen and take a dark blue hud and its just AWESOME !!!!

Dont be, ED is going to get fixed, we are having a blast with Vr experiences, you dont know what battledome is maybe or the presence you get playing pool on pool nation vr with a friend in a bar talking about geek stuff. On the other hand i fell bad for oculs users, so much wait but havent had a real vr experince yet until touch arrives. I can imagine then playing with an xbox controllers and make me so sad for them.
